Propane or Charcoal for the grill

I use only charcoal and use a chimney starter to light it. But I use my pellet smoker most of the time. No propane or lighter fluid for me.

I have a small stainless propane in the coach as well as a Kamado Joe Jr. Needless to say, the propane doesn't get used much. We use the Kamado Joe for grilling, smoking, baking, etc. I start it with a Mapp gas torch (handheld) and it is up to whatever temp I need within 15 minutes. That could be 220 for a low and slow or 600 for a pizza. I use only natural lump charcoal, and it is nearly 100% efficient. At the end of the cook, simply close the vents and the coals will go out. Rake them around before the next cook to remove the ash, and then add however much more you need.

For a size reference, the Jr can handle a 10 pound butt, a small brisket, two racks of ribs (cut in half using rob racks), a whole chicken, and a 13" pizza.

I stumbled on their brand of kamados when they were doing a roadshow at our local Costco in January. We have since fallen in love with them, and cook on them almost every night of the week.

Are these units similar to the Big Green Egg ?

Yes. They are relatively new to the scene, but not brand new. They compete with the Big Green Egg in performance and warranty (lifetime) but at a lower price. I had wanted a big green egg but couldn't bring myself to pay the price. I stumbled on KJ at Costco in January and liked the price. I went home and researched and was back the next day to buy the classic size. After one cook, the CFO instructed me to go back and get the Jr for the motorhome and smaller cooks.

Google Kamado Joe Costco to see if there is a roadshow near you. They also have local dealers, but the Costco prices can't be touched.

We will not use a propane grill! Just like the taste of meat cooked on charcoal better! I had a hard time finding a good portable charcoal grill!

Portable weber propane grill with stand. Made connection to main RV pro paint tank. Have have it for 7 years works great!

We use Weber charcoal but also carry propane grill as fire regulations sometimes negate use of charcoal.

I do not like the chimney charcoal starters because the burning paper used to start the charcoal creates wind blown live ash. Not good stuff in a tinder dry forest out west.

Previous to our Horizon we used a gas grill. We had an adapter that used fuel from our main tank. When we purchased our Horizon our propane tank is behind our big slide and not accessible with out crawling under the coach. I did not want to mess with small bottles so DW found and purchased an electric grill that we are both happy with. She says it is much easier to clean, set up, and store.

We carry both, Propane just in case of fire ban full sizw Weber 18" one touch with an ash catcher attachment. Start with chimney and Weber lighter cubes

If I can't cook over a real wood fire then the gas grill gets it done a lot quicker and cleaner. ;-)
