Propane regulator

I need some schooling on replacing our propane regulator.

We have the MH at home getting it ready for the summer season.

I went out and started the heating system to warm it up to a reasonable temperature. (Had been working. However I had the propane tank topped off about a week ago. But never started the furnace till 2 days ago)About an hour later when I checked on it I realized that while the blower and igniters fired, it was obviously cycling like it was starved for fuel.

Thinking back and going through process again, I realized that when I turned / turn the LP gas valve on I did not hear that normal clunk sound.

I shut the furnace off and closed and opened the LP valve. No sound. So I lit the stove. 1 burner then a second and in about 15 seconds both died, no gas.

I talked to a RV tech who said to tap on the regulator and tank valve. I did and while don't get that clinking sound we have gas flowing to run the furnace.

He said it can sometimes be the tank valve but, let's replace the regulator.

I started calling around to find a replacement regulator. The only identifying numbers on our year old regulator (coach is new) is "524 AS"
No brand, etc.

While its under warranty, that's a 150 mile RT and time. I want to learn how to replace this myself.

My dealer said "most" two stage regulators are the same. It's a quick swap. However my RV tech friend said you need to calibrate it after installing it.

So I picked up a Olympian two stage vertical vent. From our dealer. It's a two stage vertical mount. However our vent points down and this one points left if installed horizontal.

It would be best if the vent pointed down like it is now. You don't want moisture to get into it. As far as calibration goes I believe they are set at the factory for proper pressure.

I just did the same job two weeks ago. Just make sure the UL label has the same numbers and that the vent is oriented in the same position. I ordered mine off amazon. The numbers partially differentiate the orientation of the vent.

In addition to proper valve orientation, make sure the flow capacities are similar, as they are not all the same.

Our propane flow was a challenge we had last year, and is now hopefully fixed. We had to replace a regulator on a trip, and had a mobile RV tech install it. The one I picked up was the proper orientation, but did not have the same flow, and it was not the same quality as the OEM unit. Tiffin paid for that repair, and the our dealer later installed an OEM one under warranty as well. More to the story, but not really relevant.........

Most LP regulators sold in RV and hardware and LP gas shops will work nicely in an RV. They all regulate to 11 W.C. inches of pressure and the flow rate is adequate for multiple common LP appliances. I'm sure there are some things that demand higher flow rates, but even a couple LP furnaces in an RV shouldn't tax a decent one.

The vent orientation is important, though. It should be downward, so horizontal or vertical design of the regulator is an important consideration.

Two stage seems to be the rage now, but back in the day the single stage ones worked just as well as far as I can see.

REally seems unusual for a 1 year old regulator to go bad. The LP system has a safety value that shuts of the LP if there is a rapid flow of LP.
Close the main valve for several minutes and then open very slowly to see if the LP will flow normally...

That happened to me just the other day. Turned gas on and off then it worked

Our motorhome is about a year old and I had to have the regulator replaced this week while on vacation. I wasn't getting any propane flow to the refrigerator, stove, etc. even though the two switches for the electric shutoff valve were "on".

Fortunately I found an RV service outlet and a very competent tech who diagnosed the problem as oil in the regulator. The propane system has an oil trap and between the regulator and the oil trap the tech drained out about a 1/2 cup of oil.

He replaced the regulator and all seems to be fine now.
