You must pay personal property taxes each year for all motorized vehicles in North Carolina. That's one of the reasons we moved to TN

No personal property taxes here in Delaware, but you pay 3.75% tax once when you register the vehicle. BTW, real estate taxes are very low here (comparatively) and income tax on retirement income is also low. No wonder half of New Jersey is moving here. When we retired, we moved here from Maryland where the RE taxes were 6 times higher.

Dare county? Your taxes should be less than $3K a year on that motorhome. It costs money to live on those barrier islands.

Register all vehicles in Texas, or South Dakota, or Florida. Drivers License must match the same state as vehicle registrations. You can use a mail forwarding company as your legal address such as escapees or Good Sam's. This type of service is designed for full timers like us. We have a physical RV deeded lot address in Va, and for awhile we had a house as well which we sold.

We are legal residents of Florida thru Good Sam's mail service. First time registration is a bit high, Florida which has no fault insurance is a bit higher than some states, and it is required to make this work. There is Florida sales tax to register any out of state vehicle that is one year or less old, but it has been a better investment than keeping our tax legal residence in VA.

Ditto what Gramps said. Declare Crestview FL as your domicile using Good Sam as your address/mail forwarder. You will pay a first year RV registration cost of $600 or so, $70 or so thereafter. Crestview is in Okaloosa county which has some of the cheapest auto/RV insurance in FL. FL has no taxes on non-real estate property, no taxes on income. Sales tax is 7.5%, but you only pay that if you bought your RV less than 6 months ago. Why pay NC all that money when you don't have to? You live wherever you RV takes you.

Gramps

Could explain what you mean by RV deeded lot in VA .... our situation is we just moved to VA with the impression Motorhomes were not subject to a personal property tax, boy were we wrong. We have a $300,000 Newmar and do not want to sell it, but can not afford the tax on it.

Thanks

Jed

We live in Deer Creek Mortorcoach Resort, a Class A motorcoach resort in the Blue Ridge mountains near Galax, (see my signature) we own our lot and we spend the summer and fall here, then head down to Florida where we lease a lot in Brooksville for four months. We spend a couple of weeks travelling each way usually using our Thousand Trails pass for Orlando or Williamsburg va or somewhere along the way.

Both our vehicles are registered in Florida and we have Florida drivers' licenses. We pay a small amount of real estate tax in Grayson County VA. We pay no taxes in Florida at all, except for sales tax of course.

Simple! Have your official state of residence be one which does not charge personal property tax (vehicle property tax).

Motor homes in Wisconsin are not taxed other than a sales tax at the time of sale or transfer to the state. After that, you just pay your annual tag fee.

Many states don't charge property tax on vehicles.

Well there you got it. Either move to a state with low registration/taxes or full time and pick any state you want.

Nevada has what they call a Government Services Tax that is similar to a property tax. On a coach they value at $300,000 the GST would be in the $4,000 per year neighborhood. It does depreciate each year, but it takes a while to get down to where it is resonable.

Definitely not an RV tax friendly state.

2 cents worth

Check out registering and licensing your unit in Montana. We had an LLC there with the mh listed as one of the vehicles belonging to it. Google Deer Creek Corporate Services in Helena and they will explain it to you.
Completely legal.
