From somebody that made their fortune in the sunscreen business, you do not need that much Gap if using a high-quality solar screen material like Phifer Suntex. Just need enough room for a little air to get behind it. Quarter inch or so.

Installed these in the exhaust stack with a 140 degree thermistor that controls off and on. Also, sealed all around the fans with aluminum duct tape to insur effective flow. They are super efficient wnd quiet.
