Realities of Consignment Selling
I decided a few months back to sell my 2005 Airstream 396 XL 39' DP. I listed it in the iRv2 classified 2005 Airstream 2005 396 XL Diesel pusher - RV & Motorhome Classifieds and the Airstream forum as well. Some activity but nothing serious. So I decided that I would take it to PPL here in Houston and try their "Consignment" selling approach. Plus side they have it on their lot with people looking to buy, they include it on their web page and do some general promotion. They charge a commission or fee of 10% of the final sales price. They require a 90 day exclusive arrangement as well. The down side. They list the Motor Home as basically stock from the factory. In other words there is no mention of any upgrades to the Motor Home at all. No listing of upgrades is allowed to placed in the coach as well. I had completed a lot of upgrades over the past year including new 15,000 BTU AC's, new inverter/converter, Progressive industries 50 AMP EMC, MCD cockpit shades, Color rear camera and color rear monitor, 42" flat screen TV with TV lift, Airforce one Toad braking system (including the equipment to mount in the Toad) and more. Their response was that they are also an RV parts store and sell these items so they are not going to promote upgrades that they could in turn sell. So unless someone notices the upgrades they are comparing similar coaches that may or may not have comparable equipment. I asked but what about the replacement of original equipment such as the AC's. They said there is no value added to a "new AC" as long as say a 10 year old AC works, blows cold air at time of sale that is all that matters. Therefore their suggested bottom line price is low. Although I have the right to set any price I choose, there is no way to promote the reason for a higher price over another comparable unit with out upgrades.
So I will see what happens.

Sad to say, but that is not only the reality of consignment selling, it's also the reality of trading. No value for upgrades, improvements, even new tires.
The only place there is an upside to this, is when you want to buy, you have the option to look at units with upgrades, and get an over-all better deal.

But, when they sell your "trade in" they at least promote the upgrades to enhance the product.

Yes, just like selling your car or trading in, they don't care if you just installed a $2,000 stereo surround sound system..
