Rear AC not working

I have a 2009 Monaco Camelot, the ac in the bedroom has quit. I replaced the start capacitor today, the motor runs but the compressor will not start. I can hear it trying to start but after a few times the breaker trips. I replaced the breaker a few weeks ago. I have also taken a soft hammer up and "tapped" the compressor a few times (have seen this work with refrigerators), still will not run. Looking for any suggestions to try before I start pricing a new unit. Thanks for any help.

Another thing you can try is installing a "hard start kit". It is a variation of a capacitor but it really boots the start windings of the compressor motor. Usually get it at an A/C supply house. Cost is usually well under a $100.

Thanks Poppasmurf The part I got this morning from PPL in Houston was labeled Hard start kit. It was a capacitor and some other piece.

Did you add the hard start kit to the capacitor or replace it? Usually a hard start kit is added parallel to the start capacitor to give it an extra boost. If it won't start with a hard start kit, then it sounds like the compressor is in rotor lock. When this happens, the current draw goes up way above normal and can cause the breaker to trip. If that is the case, then your only option is a new compressor or a new AC. Sorry!

I just had to replace my rear Dometic Penguin II A/C-heat pump unit in June. Had a great mobile tech in Boise to replace it. He told me the average life is 10 years on most units. I upgraded to a 15k unit from a 13.5k for $200 more. That thing blows ice cubes and the heat pump works great too. Good luck.
