Who is your policy with? I had a rear end go bad earlier this year, a carrier bolt broke, and Good Sams wanted to see the three times the fluid had been changed.

There should never be any metal in the diff oil, and that oil should be full, clean, and new looking even after 10 years. And of course it should have "that smell"
Yes there should never be metal in the oil and thats why you don't wait 10 years to change it however a small amount of metal shavings is nothing to worry about and does not warrant changing the differential unless of course the insurance company authorizes it.

A fine metal powder in the oil is OK. Normally rear ends have magnetic fill or drain plugs so this powder collects on the magnets. No chips or shavings allowed ever. Metal the size of a grain of rice for sure not allowed. A size of a grain of rice exceeds my definition of metal powder.

performance first, they are great so far, they also asked at the dealer If I had done maintenance and they told them that I wasn"t due for any because I had low miles, so they paid no questions asked.

ninos, after you do your first oil change on your new rear please let us know how much shavings appear. Glad your plan worked out.

Pace Arrow 2004 Workhorse W-22. Chasing a vibration, replaced diff and rear wheel bearings. Less than 5,000 miles, I had to pay, not fun!
