Replacing Duals with singles
Driving for 10hours today on I-40 then I-35 I saw a lot of over the road trucks with singles vice duals. Has anyone ever looked into this possibility with Class A's? I wonder if it would improve performance of a rig if this were done?

I used to own my own Tractor and Trailer, I don't want any part of them. Not especially on my tag diesel pusher.

Over on the TiffinRVNetwork there is a poster who installed the Michelin Super Singles on his coach back in 2008. He should have a good idea of how they work at this point. His screen name is Historyljc. He is on this board as well

Having experienced a blowout this summer of a rear tire, I look back on that "event" and thank my lucky stars that I had 3 remaining good tires to get me to the side of the road....and then safely off-the-road (using the emergency lane at 10 mph) to reach the next exit 1 mile away. The super-wide tires do indeed look cool, but I'm not going there.

Newmar tested them a few years ago. They are not standard on any Newmar now and never have been. Guess they found there were problems. I looked into them when I needed new tires last year. Just didn't like the idea and expense even though I replaced the rear rims with 2 Alcoa's and 2 steel wheels.
I even talked with some drivers that had them, although I never found them on anything but the trailers, never on the drive wheels.

Goodyear, Bridgestone and Sumitomo make the Super Singles too..
Reading around on trucker forums, its about 60/40 for/against. The most sited pros were MPG increase, 100% ride improvement, cost. Most sited con was if its flat, your stopped. But with RVs, I dont think thats a real problem.
I wonder if I can move up to 22.5" wheels and super singles?? Hmmm..

The reason they did not go to the super single was a fear about tire distribution. Putting a tire on a coach that is not readily available, if a replacement is needed (for what ever reason) did not seem like a good idea.

As already stated, duals give you a short term back up to ride on. Also, if you trash the right rear outer with duals (the most common failure position due to curb damage) you replace a tire that's cheaper than a S/S.

I have a good friend that owns a trucking company and we talked about this at one time. The singles are lighter and about 8 trillion times more expensive and way harder to find.
Well maybe not 8 trillion, but you get the idea.

I worked for a company that tried them on some of their trailers. After a serious accident caused by a blowout they went back to dual wheels.

Not in this life time! BBCP (that's back before cel phones), I've had blow outs on a rear duals twice. Once was twenty plus miles out from Kingman AZ on 93 south on a Sunday and the other was on a return trip between St. George UT and Vegas, again on a Sunday. On both I limped in at 15 to 20 mph to nearest place to get tire changed.

I know of several companies that used them, then went back to duals. As has already been stated, if you have a flat with a Super Single, you're down until you find a replacement. Big Truck or RV, it doesn't matter, as you do NOT want to run and ruin that high-dollar rim.
On duals, if you have a flat, you can even "single out" (remove the flat and run to a decent dealer on one tire instead of two) if you're in, say, Rock Springs WY, or worse.
