Rooftop AC/Heat pump

My AC/heat pump puts out heat in either cooling or heat pump setting, is the problem in the duo therm controller or the AC unit ?

Without performing some diagnostics, any answer you receive one way or the other is nothing more than a guess.

Is it a Penguin? The original Penguins default to heat mode and the coil that operates the reversing valve have been known to fail.

It would definitely help if you had the model number of the unit, you can usually find it by taking the top cover off.

X2 on reversing valve.

I had a problem like this ~4 years ago. The AC was working fine, we moved to a different site and it defaulted to heat mode.

Went on the roof to check and found that the the wires going to the reversing valve had contacted the copper tubing and melted going to ground. Fixed the wires and tested the AC and it put on cold air. Did a better job securing the wires so they wouldn't touch the tubing.

x3 on the reversing valve.
I had the same problem and changed out the solenoid. Mine looks similar to the solenoid on a irrigation valve you may have in your yard. Very easy to change if you're okay getting on the roof.

Thanks guys for your help on this. When i got home after my trip the AC worked normally again, so maybe it had something to do with the shore power at the campsite !!
