When we returned from our spring trip, we have a little onion shaped dish for storing partial onions that was cleaned and then stored in one of our cabinets. Now the cabinet smells like rotten onions. The bottom of the cabinet has a thin carpet to keep things from sliding around. I have used carpet shampoo twice and have the battery operated fridge fan blowing in the cabinet, all to no avail at this point. Now we sprinkled some baking soda hoping that will absorb the odor. I can't believe an empty dish created this big of a smell.

Anyone else ever had an issue like this and know of a better solution? Ripping out the carpet from the cabinet is not an option.

First of all, WHY NOT? It's only carpet and, most likely it can be replaced by something that's pretty darn close in type/size/style/color etc. Second, while we've not had the experience using any, there are, a we understand, some sort of "smoke bombs" or, similar devices that are supposed to rid an automobile of the stench of nicotine and tobacco smells from a previous owner. I don't know if anything like that will work on your issue or not.

Maybe another option is PAINT too. You could find a color of your choice and, under it a product called KILZ which, is an undercoat that is supposed to seal the surface for top coating. Just some suggestions.

Try pouring some 10% Cleaning Vinegar on a piece of White Bread on a plate then place that in the cupboard overnight!

Just an Old fashioned trick to eliminate doors!

Rent or buy a ozone machine..... A good size unit can do an entire MH in a day or two.. Small unit in a cupboard maybe a few hours... But it will remove the smell..

Not sure why removing the carpet is not an option but I'm sure you have your reasons. I don't have any carpet in my cabinets, I use the bubbly stuf (can't think of the proper name) that comes in a roll. It can be installed and replaced in a heart beat.

Have you tried Febreeze?

I have seen them used and used them myself on some pretty smelly situations and they work great..... Yes.. You do not want to be in the same room when the unit is in use... But for deodorizing it works great....no cover up.. Just a fresh smell..

Try taking a plain piece of charcoal (not presoaked with lighter fluid) and closing it up inside the cabinet. They are pretty good at soaking up odors.

I will try this if the baking soda doesn't work. I have read vinegar works but didn't want to get the cabinet wet.

Fresh coffee grounds in a pie pan will absorb most odors.

HoleInOne has this right. Aluminum pie pan full of real charcoal will fix this.

I will try the charcoal next, happen to have a bag in my house basement. Baking soda got rid of about 90% of the smell. I can still smell it, but have to stick my head in the cabinet now as opposed to before when you could smell it as soon as you entered the coach.
