Man that kills me when I look at a used motorhome at a dealership then calculate the sales tax on a 125K......
Any way around this without going to jail?

In Texas, you pay sales tax whether you buy from a dealer or private party because when you go to get your plates for the vehicle, you pay sales tax at that time if you didn't pay it through a dealer. I imagine other states do the same.

In WA we only pay the use tax on the difference if traded, still cost us a bunch!

Over 10% in many California cities (LA) and you either pay the dealer or pay the DMV when you register the vehicle. The actual amount based on city and county taxes is calculated on the zip code. So you pay regardless of place of purchase.

The good news (for now) in SC is sales tax on private use vehicles of any type is limited to $300. And like others it matters not if you buy from a dealer or private party. But we also have an annual personal property tax which can be quite hefty.

Unless you live in one of those states that does not have sales tax, you will pay the sales tax. You can look into the Montana LLC, but if you plan on still living in your current state then you are more than like SOL (slightly out of luck) with the Montana LLC.
Be glad you don't live in Puerto Rico which just raised its sales tax to 10.25%.

I Illinois if you buy from a dealer and trade you pay tax on the difference of the amount of the trade. If you buy from an individual I think its $1000 unless the transaction is with a relative then its nothing, I have no idea how they verify that you are indeed a relative.

No sales tax here in NH, but when we finally buy next year I think the registration fees will make up for that!
