Saw something I thought was odd for a new Diesel Pusher.
Gang,
We're camped here in Yuma for a few days and, one of our party is interested in purchasing a new(er) coach. Well, he found one in a near by sales place called "RV World". It's a 2017, 42' Thor Tuscany. It's got the 450HP Cummins and it also has a tag. But, when the two sales gents pulled up in front of ours and his, I noticed something I thought was a bit odd, for a THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR COACH, and that is, the fact that it's got a REAR RADIATOR.
I've been around these things for quite a while and, there's a few things that dictate what diesel coach gets a rear or side radiator. Now, I'm certainly no expert on this subject but, I most certainly thought, that a diesel coach of that year, length and COST, would have a side radiator. Apparently my thoughts are waaaaaaaaaay off. The discussion of rear vs side radiators has only been tossed around about a zillion times here and, if I recall, most of the opinions about what versions get a side radiator is the longer, normally 39' or longer and, more expensive, usually upwards of oh, maybe $175K or more, (kind-a guessing here) are the ones that are equipped with the side radiator.
Now, first, it's not a big deal to me or the CEO, 'cause we're not the ones looking for a new one. But, if, IF we were, I'd sure as heck aim for a side radiator after owning a rear one for over 6 years now. Second, just WHAT does dictate a side radiator in a higher end coach?

It isn't that unusual. Newmar's Ventana which is 300k+ has a rear radiator as well. I'm sure there are others that are the same. That one just popped into my mind.

The manufacturer that ordered the chassis dictates the radiator placement. Side radiator costs more so the bean counters get their say.

Entry level diesel coaches have rear radiators. Mid to upper level have side radiators. Most entry level coaches are $300k+ now. Mid is $374-400 and upper is $500+. If they put all the ammenities of a mid-upper level coach in an entry level coach, who would buy the mid to upper level coach?

I surely thank you all for responding. As for "Entry" level diesel coaches being in the $300K now, well, if that's the case, pretty much rules us out FOR EVER on purchasing a NEW diesel coach. Not that I or WE were looking. Our '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT and a mere 80K on the clock AND IS PAID FOR, is doing and will keep doing JUST FINE. Wow, $300K for an entry level, man there's a lot of rich folks on this planet.

Scott FYI
NADA says the new price on our Horizon was $228K in 2004.
U.S. Inflation Rate, 2004-2017 ($100)
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the dollar experienced an average inflation rate of 2.01% per year. Prices in 2017 are 29.6% higher than prices in 2004.
That puts the now price @only ~$295K But I don't think that an 04 Horizon was an "Entry" level DP in 04, it was Winne's Flagship. Maybe a GREED factor needs to be added in.
Like you, I'll keep mine.

Roger that rgvtexan,
Ours has an MSRP of $217 when new. Although, no one in their right mind would or does pay MSRP. And, I'm sure you're correct in the fact that the Horizon of our era WAS NOT the entry level for a diesel coach. But, not that it matters, yep, we're keeping ours and, as a matter of fact, we're headed out right now to go see a couple of RV interior decorations places here in Yuma to get some ideas.

The idea that only "entry-level" DPs have rear radiators is one of those silly blanket statements that get made on here from time to time. While cost is certainly a consideration, another is size. Side radiators are more common on tag-axle coaches, which also tend to be more expensive, but that doesn't make all non-tag coaches "entry-level." I've had both side and rear radiators, and had no trouble with either.

Mine was around 200k in 2002. Side radiator. I also can change my belts in about 5 minutes. Not sure about water pump, haven't had to change it yet. But I DID have to replace a Injection Actuation Pressure Sensor last month. Took mechanic about 30 minutes including getting the part out of supply, removing and replacing, and paperwork on work ticket. He said if I had had a rear radiator, it could have added from between 4 to 8 hours of additional labor!
Do your research, and buy what you want and can afford! Not saying rear radiators are bad, but personally I don't think I'd ever own one . . . .

$195k in '95 dollars is about $325k in 2017 dollars. Sounds about right.
