"Wiring short" sounds like the motor is drawing excess current. Almost all motors will do that if the rotor is not able to spin up. Check and see if your slide is stuck or remove the motor and see if it spins up. (Off hand I don't recall whether that is a slide in or slide out operation.)
There are a couple of youtube video's about fixing Shwintek systems. I'd be inclined to check for other damage or an incorrect setting in the controller. Did one side of the slide try to move each time? Was it the same end? There is also an over ride function that may reset the unit:

The motors that will not draw excess current when the rotor cannot spin up are called impedance protected motors and found in places where there is very low torque like pancake fans. Your slide motor definitely will not fit in that category.
