Dash cam save me from having an at fault accident. showed my video to responding police officer he wrote up incident as the other driver drifted into my lane gave copy of video to my insurance co. as evidence other drivers insurance still denied claim. Went to arbitration, arbitrator ruled in my favor and said other driver was driving recklessly ( video also showed my speed and location and a posted speed limit sign) was not charged with at fault accident and my co-pay deductible was paid to me

will not drive without a dash cam anymore
So it wasn't even a court of law and its various standards of evidence that played here. It was a simple matter of an insurance company trying not to pay, What actually happened was secondary to them. (Nice way to say they were acting in bad faith.) Of course yours didn't want to pay either and fought it. You provided them with the tools to do so. Good for you.

Camera stays.

Actually that is not true. I have had dash cams in every vehicle I have owned as a business owner and I have 3 trucks that are on the road daily. All the dash cams have a time and date stamp on the picture. yes it can and will be shown in court if you have a competent lawyer. it has save me a bundle of money a couple of times when the "victim" claimed they were hit by my trucks. Now that I have retired I still have them on all my personal vehicles and they do show time/date stamps. the card gets copied and handed to a police officer as soon as the accident happens. I carry a laptop to make the copies everywhere I go and so did my drivers/technicians

Dash cam

It’s surprising how many idiots are on the road. We are in Kansas and it happens all over. We were headed to an area lake and was approaching a nasty intersection, have had a lot of accidents there. I was going 65 with 1 ton & 38’ 5’er 22,800lbs. I seen a truck getting ready to pull out and kept saying no as I let off the gas. He pulled out anyway, he made it across the road ok but the dumb ass in the van didn’t She pull out right in front of me, my only out other than slamming into the back of her was to use left lane. Fortunately The intersection was wide and no oncoming traffic, even letting of gas and hitting brake momentarily ( knowing I couldn’t stop) I was still going 50 when I passed her blowing my horn all the way. I so badly wanted get stop but that’s road rage and then on me. Wife was so scared she was still shaking when we arrived at the campground about 20 min later. They changed that intersection a few years ago to a roundabout in the middle of a two lane road posted at 65mph but still almost got hit last year by someone who just couldn’t wait. Got to get ahead of that big rig. Don’t knock another’s choice of what to do until you can put yourself behind a the wheel, it’s easy to say you would have done different. Not easy to make the right choice with just seconds to determine the outcome of who might live or die. Driving Defensively what ever I’m in or wherever I’m going, just waiting for the next IDIOT to pull out in front of me. Oh by the way I’m 72 so I have been around a while, with no accidents in the past 48 years that we’re my fault. First one a car crossed 6 lanes of traffic and through a stop sign to hit me head on at 5 mph. She totaled my work car worth $250. Just drive defensively all the time expecting the in expected.

Purchased my first D/C after towing 5th wheel thru Kansas on I-70 early Sunday morning no other vehicles in sight, a car comes out of nowhere the driver flips me off and pulls ahead then cuts me off and slams on his brakes! As I’m busy in panic mode, the car floors it and takes the exit immediately on the right. Thankfully I was able to avoid a rear end collision, how is beyond me. Must have taken 5k miles of brake lining off in seconds. Made the dash cam purchase shortly after, Bought Garmin dash cam 35 - really like it.

What????

You approached an intersection you knew to be dangerous at 65 mph. That is not defensive driving.

In California 55 mph is the limit when towing. I think that is a good practice for any RV unless you are in someplace like Nevada and there are few others on the road.

It is a simple concept. You are going camping, not the emergency room. Frankly at 65 mph when things go wrong, your wife will not need the ER.

What a dash cam might show is that you were driving too fast for conditions even if you were not not exceeding the speed limit.

You need to read all before making a [ moderator edit] comment. I expect every car, truck to pull out in front of me, it has happened to many times. If there is a vehicle waiting to enter highway I always let off the gas just in case you don’t know what they will do. If I didn’t have control off the situation I would have hit them. Speed at that point won’t make that much difference 50 to 65 your still going to have a problem. Then again maybe all RV owners should drive 30 just in case an idiot pulls out. If I would have been traveling at 50mph as you suggested and they pulled out the same thing would have happened. Put yourself it that scenario and you would have the same problem I did. But then again Your mouth would have pulled you through because you could stop on a dime in that situation and give a nickel change. We’ve had 3 teenagers pull out of a stop sign and get t- boned by a semi in the past year, now what in the hell could that semi driver do different in your excellent opinion

Lots we’ve learned here. So we have overwhelming evidence that dash cam footage is used by police and insurance companies and in court. Ive seen no evidence that proved it is not admissible.
We’re told we should drive under the speed limit to accommodate stupid drivers. And we find that after saving lives by skilled driving, you will still get criticized !

I am really impressed with the quality of your photo from your dash cam, would you mind sharing what product that is?

Wow! Very affordable. How does it hold up sitting in the sun?

Here’s some info on stopping distance based on speed. The figures are for a well maintained car on a dry road with an alert driver.

At 50 mph with a half second reaction time the car will travel 49’ before the brakes are applied. It will travel an additional 125’ before coming to a stop.
Total distance: 174’

At 65 mph with a half second reaction time the car will travel 64’ before the brakes are applied. It will travel an additional 211’ before coming to a stop.
Total distance: 275’

MPH Distance
30 75’
40 119’
45 145’
60 239’
70 314’
75 355’
80 398’

Distance more than triples as speed doubles.

And how does a "well maintained car" compare to a well maintained 30,000 pound motorhome?
