Self-Aware Starter

This one is straight out of the "Terminator - Rise of the Machines". We have a Fleetwood Discovery 2006, model 39L. It is a Freightliner Chassis with a CAT C7 Engine. We were stopping for the night (not hooking up to electric), dropped the jacks, extended the slides and shut the engine off. After pulling the key from the ignition, the starter on the coach activated and started cranking on its own. We put the key back in and turned it, the engine restarted, and after a few minutes we shut the engine off again. While the starter did not demonically fire again, it began clicking inconsistently (i.e. 7 clicks 2 seconds apart, nothing for a minute, 4 clicks 5 seconds apart, nothing for 5 minutes, 10 clicks...etc.). We shut off both the main and aux disconnects, and the random clicking has continued. I think we can start the engine again, but I don't want the starter to burn out if it tries to engage while we are going down the road. Any ideas from anyone on what is going on/troubleshooting? I do not have any electrical experience or tools unfortunately. Thanks in advance for any ideas or help!

Any water spray or immersion around the electrical connectors lately? We had the generator start up one night after hosing down the front compartment that afternoon.

Broken spring in a relay?

Lots of rain going on prior to the stop that night TwelveVolt, but no immersion. Suspecting a fault in wiring and starter will not crank now - so I'm thinking it might have burned up. Thanks for your reply

I would suspect the starter solenoid has failed, because the ignition switch went bad and kept energizing the solenoid briefly. Some auto stores, like O'Reilly will test starters free, call a few, or HDT repair shops and inquire about yours.

The ignition switch energizes the solenoid, without that the starter cannot operate.
