septic smell for several years
I always need to empty my tanks before I travel to each campground. The smell in my 2006 Sea breeze class A is unbearable. I do open a side window. Any ideas for a fix?

Yep, the GEO method (search above) - I modify this by adding a pail of hot water, laundry soap, laundry fabric softener and a little bleach (what you would use for 1 load of laundry) to my tank via toilet just prior to traveling. The driving scrubs the tank and after camping (with a nice smelling toilet) I dump.

Leave a little water in the toilet, if it isn't there later repair the seals on your toilet. Leaking toilet seals cause a majority of black tank smells.

I'd also check to see if the vent pipe up through the roof isn't plugged up.

Try driving with all vents and widows CLOSED and the dash heat/air blower ON HIGH.....(not on recirculate).
Something in the sewage/drain system is not right/leaking odor into the cabin of the coach.
Do all of your p-traps have water in them, (washer, sinks, tub/shower AND toilet).
Does your toilet flush ball/slide seal leak?
Do you have a bad seal where the toilet is fastened to the floor?
If you have any air admittance valves/mechanical drain vents check them.
If everything is in working order it is imposable for tank odor, (gray or black), to get into the living area of an RV, (except down from the roof vents and when the toilet is being emptied/flushed into the back tank).

I need to remove the toilet and replace the seal at the floor. Minor cost. Bowl holds water and I have water in the p-traps. I don't know how to check my vent pipe to the roof for leaks.

You will see lots of good suggestions here and on other threads by doing a search. If tank products, toilet seals, P traps, etc. don't seem to be making much of a difference, make sure the smell is not from your grey water tank also. It can be very nasty if it is not being vented properly or if the anti-siphoning valves near your P traps (sinks, washer/dryer) are not sealing properly. We solved all the intermittent smells by replacing all of the anti-siphoning valves, and installing a roof vent venturi effect device (There are 2 or 3 different types). Hopefully your roof vents are not open somewhere below the roof line. If you have tried several things and the usual suspects, and you are sure it is the black tank and not the grey, then poor roof venting may be your only problem. The Extreme Vent we got from CoilNwrap.com works great, and will last a very long time.

X2 on the roof vent. That sewer gas needs to get sucked out the top, not blown in to the coach. It sounds to me like you have bad venting, causing pressure in the tank.
Doesn't matter HOW clean you get the tank. It'll smell until you vent it properly.
Same with the gray water. If it has a separate vent it needs to get fixed also.

Thanks for all the reply's. I believe the smell is from the bathroom sink so I ordered an anti-siphoning valve replacement for $5.85 shipped.

Ooooops, should have said AAV (Air Allowance Valves) not anti-siphoning valves. They allow the additional air you need at areas where an additional roof vent would be impractical or hard to plumb in. If you flush your toilet and hear a "Plop-Plop" noise at the closest sink when you do that, that is the correct operation of the AAV. If they don't seal good when not in operation=Bad odor.

I forget which thread I posted the link to RVIA regulations and standards to, but their regulations state each/all holding tanks must be vented to the roof. If yours is not plumbed to the regulations you should contact your RV manufacturer.

Both tanks must be vented to the roof, (I doubt that you will find ANY that are NOT).
However, mechanical vents, (aka: air admittance valves), are allowed in place of individual drain vent for sinks, tub/showers and/or washers....(my coach has none but some have 3-4).
They often are the "weakest link" in a RV drain system and need replacing to eliminate odor from entering the living space.
