Sewer Smell in Coach

We have a 2000 Monaco LaPalma, just had it a couple of weeks. We have just begun to notice a slight sewer smell inside the coach. I thihk we've been doing the right things with emptying the black water. And I put another scoop of the anti-odor stuff in the toilet. I think I remember reading someplace about what can cause oder, but now I can't find the article(s).

Try using liquid laundry detergent and/or fabric softener, many on here say it works for them. Also may try dumping the tank when you first arrive at a CG and then fill the tank with fresh water and add a healthy amount of bleach to disinfect, then drain after 20 mins or so. Also check your roof vent for any obstructions. As for the cause of the smell, it's poop.

Two things that I would look at are the toilet seal and the roof vent to the black tank.

I had a similar issue, but found a cure. My toilet will not seal unless I slide my foot off the pedal and allow it to snap back. I then add water to the toilet by lifting the flush pedal with my foot. If the water drains out, I try again.

Couple of things, after you have been on the road the water will shake out of the traps on the sinks and shower, sometimes allowing the smell back in the coach, or if your coach has been parked awhile the water will evaporate. Try running a little water in the drains. Also most plumbing systems have vacuum breakers in the vent/drain lines, if one of those get stuck open stink will happen. They are usually located hear the sink drain plumbing in the bathroom or kitchen. Additionally running with the bathroom roof vent open and a window cracked will sometimes cause negitive pressure and pull the smell in.

On my previous coach I found a leak in the black water tank allowing liquid to settle under the tank and the smell came up into the bathroom. Leak fixed, washed out under the tank with soap and water, smell gone.

Plumbed for a washer?? Put a piece of tape over the water drain.

I had a similar problem and when I checked the roof vent cap I found a very large wasp nest under the cap. Removed that and no more smell.

Check the vacuum breakers - especially the one on the back of the toilet. The seal on the vacuum breakers will get brittle with age. Changing vacuum breakers (3 in our coach), and vent cap (went to a venturi type) fixed our sewer odor problem.

How in the world did people get along without the internet? Just kidding - sort of - I am 64 and know how we did it. But it is SO EASY and WONDERFUL these days. Thanks for all the quick responses and advice. We will check out all the suggestions.

Run a rinse load in your washer machine to fill the p trap.

Get a Cyclone vent at Camping World, about $20.00 for the black water vent on the roof. It fixes the problem.

Had the same problem, removed the OEM vents and installed cyclone vents, no more problems.

I use the GEO system. Easy to do and it works !! Also have a cyclone.
