Should I Consider This Coach
I currently own a 2008 Monaco Safari Simba with a Chevy 8.1 vortec. I am looking to upgrade to diesel. Today I looked at a 2014 Coachmen Sportscoach 40ft. It has a 340 HP Cummins. We like the floor plan but reviews are mixed. Can anyone share their experience with Coachmen. I know the adage that you get what you pay for but I would like to hear from those with experience. Thanks for your feedback.

You will be taking a step down from a Monaco to a Coachman. Monaco made a great coach. However, you will be taking a step up from gas to diesel. Hopefully someone with a Coachman will chime in.

Why not? It is probably on a freightliner xcs chassis which is good. The rest of the stuff inside is like everybody else. The tires and batteries should still be in good shape. Get a warranty so that if there is something left to fix the dealer will take care of it.

340 HP is if memory serves the ISB motor and in my opinion is a bit short on power for that large of coach. Not saying if won't get you there.

If you plan on much travel in the mountains, you want a little more horsepower....we currently have same engine your looking into, it gets us there, but we are looking to upgrade for more hp.

Way under powered for a 40 coach, but coachman had to cut corners some place and that's just the start.

You might consider going for an older but higher end coach for the same price. Features like solid wood cabinets, better appliances, air leveling and AquaHot are things you will love but not always find on mid-level coaches.

My concern is the step down in quality from the Monaco to a Coachman. Kind of like stepping down from a Lincoln to a Ford Focus.

Coachman makes a fine motorhome for their price point. Yes there are "better" motorhomes out there that also cost more. My dad owned a Coachman and he never had any issues with it. As already stated, if you're going to travel in the mountains a lot, a bigger engine may be in order, but that doesn't mean the Coachman is a poor choice if you plan on staying away from the hills. $1M will get you a great coach, but most of us can't afford $1M for a motorhome.

So much more can be had for the dollar. You can reach much further up the quality ladder with a pre-owned coach.

There are quite a lot of coaches (40Ft) with 300, to 350 HP range, with no issues. Going up steep inclines, requires down-shifting and keeping RPM into the 2000.

Thanks for all the feedback. I decided against moving forward with the Coachmen. What HP is adequate for traveling up steep grades? 400hp?
