Unhappy Single click no crank

Hey guys,

So were getting ready to go on dead tour following dead & co around and wouldn't you know it something decides to stop. It started he yesterday no problems and now nothing. The batteries are all charged and I've gone through most of the motions that I could. Checking connections, tapping on the starter, checking fuses, checking relays, but nothing. What is irritating the most is it been running fine in preparation for the trip. Any ideas from the more experienced crowd out there?

Have you checked the negative battery cable chassis frame connection? Recommend you remove it clean and reinstall. What is the battery voltage when you try to start it?

Single click no crank

Sometimes I get the same symptoms on mine. I have a metal rod that I use to short the large terminals on the starter to spin the starter. It does not engage the motor because I am not activating the solenoid, but it always cranks after that.

I have replaced the solenoid, and a replacement starter is in my future. I will install one of the Denso gear reduction starters. Nothing but good reviews on them.

Take the battery to an Autozone or Advanced Auto or some place like that and have them load test the battery. Does your motorhome home have the Aux Start that uses the chassis batteries to start the engine? If so try that.

Fords are notorious for battery terminal connection issues. Clean thoroughly Have fun on your dead journey.

a click on the starter could be a open on the armature or the armature is sticking to a pole shoe have some one hold the key in the start position then don't tap but hit the starter hard it should start but it needs to ne replace now.this will just work a few times

I would also give this a try first, this same thing happens on my Jeep at times and it gives one click and then nothing. It is simply a bad connection.

Still crappy

I've cleaned the terminals rather excessively. I've also tried tapping it with the key turned. I think the culprit is this relay on the upper passenger side of the radiator I hear nothing when the keys turned and when I try to jump across it I lose all voltage. I feel like the ridiculous resistance isn't allowing the starter to go

Also,

Their is a aux start. I've tried using it with the regular battery. A bit of random info we had a nasty storm a day ago and she was plugged into the house when we had a black out. Idk if that would do any damage.

Do you use a surge protector when plugged in? Strange things can happen when this kind of black out happens.

do you have headlights ? are they bright? when you turn the ignition to start do the headlights go out ? do you have a battery disconnect switch that could have been turned off?

Another possibility is a faulty segment on the starter motor armature. It could also be a sticking brush in that unit. If you have access, try turning the armature 15 degrees or so and try again.

And we have a winner. Pulled the starter and did a bench test random to find out the teeth are spining freely on the arm......new starter no more issues

I had a similar issue and it was the starter.
