Ski Trips in MHs
The last three winters we have taken our DP MH on ski trips. We not only use it to get there, but we also stay in it while we're there. We travel with 3 dogs
08-09, we went in our 98 DSDP(no toad) to Sipapu Ski Resort, NM and then Santa Fe. There were about five FREE rv sites w/50 amp service at the base of the Sipapu ski mtn. They were "first come first serve", no reservations. 10 yr old Michelin XRVs. We didn't even own cables/chains then. We rented a car in Santa Fe in get around, and we didn't need a car at Sipapu.
09-10 we went again, this time in our newly custom painted 98 DSDP(no toad) to Durango, CO(xPurgatory) and Wolf Creek. We stayed in Bayfield, CO which is half way between the 2 ski areas, just east of Durango, and rented a car for getting around. We left the Bayfield/Durango area in a blizzard that had just begun. If we had left any later, we would have been snowed in for a few days and the daughter needed to get back home for school. As you leave Durango heading south on US550, there is one short steep section of hwy to negotiate. The blizzard had caused a southbound uphill 18 wheeler(without chains/cables) to jack knife, but the police had the northbound downhill traffic stopped, and they were letting the uphill southbound traffic thru wo/stopping(momentum). Then in near whiteout conditions(see photo) we drove at about 30mph for 2 hrs until we got out of the blizzard. Being a retired pilot, it was like a day at the office for me, but DW was stressing big time. New Michelin XZAs this time, and we still didn't own any cables/chains.
10-11 we went in our 98 Monaco 42' Signature w/2wd Toyota FJ Cruiser in tow to Leadville, CO and Ski Cooper. We stayed at my buddys, "The Leadville RV Corral", in Leadville. The drive in Leadville from the south(Buena Vista) is usually a piece of cake until you get within about 5 miles of Leaville, then the road can be a little snowy. But the county and city do a good job of keeping things plowed. Michelin XZEs on drive axle. Again no issues, but we had a set of Z cables for both the MH and toad just in case.
This winter we're headinn back to Leadville in our 00 Sig 43' Caesar(unless we sell it). New Dunlop SP160s. We will have Z cables with us just in case.
Don, Lisa, and Lex

We ski about 9 weeks per year. Either Europe, Japan or USA in ourt summer and in our season July August in Australia.
I have promised my wife we wont use our motor home to ski from (seemed like the right thing to asay at the time as I was bending her arm to purchase) Now I'm wondering if I can bend the truth a little - more like a politician really.
Only this morning she made me repeat my promise - its getting harder.
I think its the luxury of a ski resort that does it for her. Me I just want to ski hard and ski often.
I would love to take it to Jackson Hole - from memory there were MH's in the car park not too far from the hill.
I would be interested in what extra steps you took to keep the plumbing working and just how often you had to fill the propane tanks

Well you should check out Tiger Run RV Resort and ski Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin Copper Mountain and Vail by rental car. I wish some CO ski areas had places to camp in motorhomes. Some may allow boondocking but , let me know if they do.
When I go, I always leave MH winterized for fear of freezing up. Do you have any trouble with that?

I can't believe that you did that w/o chains !!!!!! Around here,we're required by law to carry chains when we're traversing a mountain pass and the fines can get horrendous.I carry regular heavy duty chains for both the MH and the toad as there are times when you are required to chain the rear wheels of the toad when pulling it.
I drive both charter and school bus and wouldn't be caught on a winter road in the snow w/o having them in the bin.I have seen MHs pulled to the side because they didn't have them on board.

Just because they require you to have chains doesn't mean you have to use them. I have them too, about time to throw them in a storage bay. But my MH manual says NEVER to use chains, and looking at the clearance around the rears I can see why. Just not enough room.

If you are crossing a pass here in Washington or on the I-5 in the Siskyous and it says chains required, you'd best have them on. If you don't and they catch you past that sign, you're gonna get a BIG ticket. If they are installed correctly you shouldn't have any trouble with clearance. I agree that there are a number of rigs out there that don't have even enuff clearance to install the tire covers and that's not a lot.

Here are a couple pictures from Mammoth mountain last winter. We spend about 20-30 days a year skiing in mammoth with the kids. Snowed 10 feet during this two week trip.

In our 98 DSDP it never got colder than about +10F and the propane furnace had a duct going to the holding tank basement area and we put a oil filled heater in the basement so nothing froze.
The 98 Signature has AquaHot system and it got down to -20F. We had the fresh water line that goes to the rear bathroom faucet, and the icemaker line freeze(nothing broke). This year I'll close off the vent on the side of MH for the refigerator. I'm also gonna put pipe insulation on exposed water plumbing.
Here is a post I made last winter http://www.irv2.com/forums/f84/extre...ing-82189.html
and a picture of the daughter and I walking back to the RV after dinner from Quincys at 7pm. It got down to -20F that nite.

I guess I'll have to throw the chains back in the MH and see if I can remember where my skis are.I loved my Volant stainless skis as they were very forgiving of a lower intermediate skier.I had to quit several years ago as the cold was affecting my asthma, but it has been really good the last few years and I think I'll give it a go again.I know that there are hookups at Stevens Pass and Crystal Mtn,but you have to boondock at Snoqualomie and White Pass.

If concerned about doing damage to your car or RV with chains. Check out "Auto Socks" (do a Google Search).

Hey, Mgosselin, we were at Mammoth at that time. Is that you next to us in this picture? We'll be there between Christmas and New Years this year. Need to get back to LA in time to see the Badgers play in the Rose Bowl. (picture shows our old rig.)
