I had the toad sideswiped in a rest area once, but so far never the coach. If I have to open a slide, I try to only open one side and put the slide over a non traveled area, like by a tree, pole, sidewalk, or anything the offers some protection to the open slide. If I can't block the slide, I don't open it. Same goes for Wal Mart lots.

I will open a slide only if that slide extends over the median or grass area & is not in anyone's way. I've done this at Tamarak (WV), parked next to the curb where the trees are planted. It's rude & there's a high probablility the slide will get hit if extended in a traffic right-of-way.

We never extend the slide unless in a campground. We also looked for and bought a floorplan that works when the slide is in. That was a must have for us.

That was a "no go" on our list.

We are new (less than 2 years) and started out with an older wide-body, with a great floor-plan, no slides, and a walk around queen bed. Starting to look now for an upgrade and everything has slides very few of which are workable floor-plans unless deployed. Some of the units with 1/2 bath solve the toilet issue so coo-doos to those designers. My wife and I were at a show last week end and as we were entering a new unit a couple were leaving and commenting "it don't have enough slides". Geez it had 4!!

Concur with the slide in policy.
Plus, if you put it out it may NOT come back in. Best for that to happen at a nice resort.

Maybe it's just me but that just doesn't seem to be proper etiquette.

Depends on where and how you might do this, which has nothing to do with etiquette IMO. I can sometimes find an end spot or an island of sorts and there's one in particular just south of Jacksonville FL that's full of these with trees as well. There's a welcome center on one of the interstates in western Missouri that not only provides for this with plenty of room, but has a lighted concrete picnic table with brick pavers all around just outside your door, so...........
