Smog AfterMarket Headers

2002 National Dolphin
Workhorse Chasis

I failed my smog test today because tester said I had aftermarket headers. I remember the PO mentioning BANKS but I have no receipts, manuals, stickers, evidence of a Banks system installed. Once I can prove the type of headers installed, I can get an EO number, and it will pass smog.

How do I find out what aftermarket headers or if they are aftermarket?
Any chance BANKS was installed as an upgrade new?

I tried the workhorse site for history, but my VIN is registered to the PO

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The whole thing is frustrating because I have had it smogged by this same station several times with no problems and it still passed all the emissions tests. Im hung up on a legality

Thanks in advance,

When your VIN returned with the name of the previous owner, did it by chance have their address and phone#? If yes, phone them and inquire. BTW, it's to your advantage to re-register your RV in your name with the mfgr. This will help with NTSB recall notifications, and factory notifications.

Thats what my headers look like. Now how do I convince smog inspector they are BANKS. If I can prove what model # I have installed I can download the proper documentation to pass smog.

You might contact Banks with the previous owners name and address they may have the sale on file. They could then send you the smog certification label. All Banks headers are all state legal.

I too installed Banks on my Jeep and MH and lost the certification stickers for the Jeep. I called Banks and they were really helpful and sent me new stickers.

There was also an option on some Workhorse chassis that included some of the Banks parts as a factory option, could be that also. If you have that there wouldn't be any problem either.

Banks is sending me new EO stickers. I just need to find the part #, which is on the flange, so Mr. smog guy can verify it is Banks. I don't have a good view of the flange, but will try with a mirror and flashlight.

Thanks for the help

I don't get it. Isn't a "smog test" about what comes out the tailpipe? What should it matter what's between the cylinder and the tailpipe if what comes out is in compliance?

California. A nice place to visit.

I agree. However, they have to visually inspect it and if the vehicle does not pass that, it fails. I had a Corvette that I took in for a smog once. The car passed the emissions test perfectly. However, the tech said it failed the visual. When I asked what failed, he said that since I was at a test only station, he didn't have to tell me. I asked him how I was expected to fix it if I didn't know what failed. He said, not his problem. California is a challenge for emissions.

ironically... CARB has unique #s for these parts, sounds like the tech is too stoopid to look up a part #.

I don't know how to prove it is a Banks system without finding a part #. I propped a mirror to look at a flange but didn't see anything. My eyes aren't the greatest. I'm assuming the part # would be on all 4 of the flanges attached to the engine block. The flanges are discolored due to many heat cycles. I'll give Banks a call again tomorrow for tips on finding the #.

If I can't find the part #, I'll try another station and bring the EO decal or eventually end up at a referee station.

I don't get why it fails if the emissions pass either. My guess is it is a CA money grab. I was rather upset with the news.
