It all started with wanting a building for our baby (motorhome). Well to have that we had to move so we did! Out to the country. Found a few acres and zoned Ag so we bought the house and land. The we had to sell our old house. ISH in this market. Well we lucked out and found 2 potnetial buyers being on the market only 2 weeks. so we they were done having a bidding war on the house we sold it. Could not believe it!!! Anyhow we love it and now have a 30'x40' building. WE are now also adding to the house size only because the county required it. Try to size down and the county makes you go bigger, what's up with that....
All this started in September and I am pooped. Moving after being somewhere for 23 years is hard especially when downsizing.

Welcome back to the site and glad to see you are getting a better setup than you had. I sure wish I had a garage for the rig.

How so? ...in what way/why does the county "require" you to make the house larger?

I'd like to know also about the house size. Never heard of making you increase the size unless you are building new in a restricted area that requires a certain house size. Being in the country should also "not" have a house size requirement. Does it have an inside bath room. Is that why you have to increase the size?

Maybe its like Indiana where my wife is from. You can tell she's from Indiana because she still walks on her toes so she can see over the corn when she thinks she is headed for the outhouse. She was 17 before she found out toilet paper didn't come out of a book with pictures on it. LOL (if she doesn't see this)s/Toby

Our county, Winnebago in Illinois created some kind of rule that your house footprint has to be larger than what you are putting up. They wouldn't include the loft upstairs in the footage. So that forced our hand and made us expand. So much for sizing down. Now I have a nice big kitchen and extra bathroom and upstairs laundry room. So it will work nicely as we age..LOL

campernut2;

Our city code has restrictions for garage height. Bottom line, a high roof garage has to be attached to the house and can't be taller than the house.

The two most dangerous things in the USA are a grand jury or a legislative body in session.
