Spare for diesel pusher, on rim or off?
Good day folks.
I don’t usually carry a spare for my DP. However, I just got new steering tires due to age, and the old ones are in good shape. So I kept them for spares.
My big question is, should I get a rim and mount the tire, or just take the tire? May seem like a dumb question, but roadside can mount change/mount tires and the tire weighs much less by itself.
I see it this way, if I carry a full spare, I can always get myself going. If I carry an unmounted spare, I wouldn’t be at the mercy of a price gouging emergency service.
Thoughts?

I'm a major do it myself kinda guy. I have had my wheels off on my own at home where I have the stuff to do it with. The major thing is the 450 to 500 foot pounds of torque for the lugs. I carry a tire not mounted on a wheel.

Yes, me too. I’m always one that likes to be prepared for anything. I currently carry all the tools needed to change a tire.
I’ve always thought that in a real bind, I could always limp on 5 tires if really needed, and exchanging one from the back to front in the event of a front blow out. But let’s face it, that kinda sucks.

Yes, you want that spare tire mounted.
You can always get a Roadside Assistance program to come out and change the tire at no cost (other than the cost to join the RA program) if you don't want to mess with changing it yourself.
But if you have a flat and don't have the tire mounted you will pay extra to have it mounted - AND the tire company may refuse to mount your spare on a wheel that was involved in a blow out and has some visble marks on it (they claim liability concerns that your wheel may have been damaged and they can't use it so theyforce you to buy a new wheel at a marked up price this is the new ripoff scam).
So have the complete wheel-tire ready to install. It faster to install, and it doesn't take up any more space.

I carry a mounted spare on a Roadmaster spare tire carrier.

I say unmounted, when you call roadside assistance they can out it on, You probably can't change the tire anyway and the wheel makes it a lot heavier to carry

I carry a unmounted spare on the roof...easy to get done as it will not bounce all that much. The rebound of a mounted one would be interesting dropping that far.

I carry a mounted spare and tools to change it. Torque is doable with a long breaker bar or torque wrench.

I have 22.5 inch wheels on my bus.
I carry an unmounted spare in the bay. I'm a serious DIY guy, I even just installed a cylinder head on our bus.. After pulling wheels at home, I concluded the Good Sam service is well worth it and will call for someone else to do it. I guess if I had an extra wheel I might carry one mounted, but I'm not looking for another wheel at this point. Just the tire is 100 lbs..

x2. 295/80/22.5 tire, these things are a beast, mounted or unmounted. It's out of the way out back, ready to go on. The Roadmaster spare tire carrier is a quality piece of equipment. I'd still call someone if I had cell coverage and that's a big if out here in the West. We carry a torque multiplier, 20 ton bottle jack and a heavy duty jack stand just in case. Hope to never have to but it pays to be prepared.

I can see carrying a spare, mounted or not. But dealing with installing that beast? No.
If out of cell range, I'll drive the toad to get someone as a last resort. Or limp into a town on 5 tires if need be too.
