Speedometer quit working.

Hi all,
I have a 2000 Pace Arrow 35 n on a F53 Ford chassis.
I had just gotten fuel and on the way home, the speedometer quit working. Is this an electronic or mechanical unit?
Anyone have that happen? Thanking everyone in advance.for any help.

It's electronic, a signal from the ECU controls it and probably your cruise control too.

Times like this your probably happy that your GPS unit shows the speed you are traveling. At least most GPS units have that feature.

Hope this is not your case! But when my spedometer stopped working they had to replace the whole instrument panel! First thought it was a sensor, then thought they could rebuild. Finally had to get a whole new panel from Ford. Good thing I had the extended warranty to cover it!

All the guages except speedo are working. I saw on the rv.net forum about the speed sensor on the transmission. I will check this out. In meantime the GPS is an excellent idea. Thank you all very much.

Some speedometers get their signal from a sensor on the top of the rear diff. housing. It shares duty with the cruise control and antilock brakes.

I have a friend whose speedometer quit working. He uses his iPhone propped up where the speedometer gauge is. The iPhone App is called Speed Box. It is very accurate and is, of course, GPS based.

I had a VW Cabriolet that had a bad speedo. I took it to a shop and we discovered the plastic gear was broken in the transmission. It wan't worth taking the transmission apart, so I got a $10 bike speedometer. It uses a magnet and reed switch to count wheel rotations. Mounted on the transaxle, it gave very accurate (0.1 mpg) speed once you entered the wheel circumference.

speedo failure

When this happened to me on my 2000 Holiday Rambler on a F53 chassis, it was the sensor on top of the differential. Easy to get to and replace (about $40) , need to have it in your hand when you go to the Ford dealer, they have a long and short shaft. This is really a pickup that senses when the large gear in the differential goes around. I actually pulled mine and cleaned it off and it worked until I could get to to a dealer. Mine also affected the transmission shifting and of course, the cruise wouldn't work. Good luck.

When you remove the sensor on the differential take it slow. Read another member broke it part of stayed in the differential. He use a sheet metal screw to remove the broken piece.
