Starter Relay Location 2006 Fleetwood Excursion

I'm having problems locating the starter relay on my 2006 Fleetwood Excursion 39C, Cat C7 350 HP engine, Freightliner Chassis. I have spent 2 days underneath the coach and it is not located on the chassis or in any compartments. I have called Freightliner and Fleetwood to no avail. This all started when I replaced the starting batteries. A day or so later I was getting ready to leave on a short trip, tried to start the engine but got no response except dash lights lighting up and flashing like crazy. Any help would be appreciated! I've owned this coach for almost 2 years and this forum has been a tremendous help! Thanks to all of you!

Welcome to iRV2.

Sorry you're here with problems .
The flashing of the dash lights , may be an indication of loss of battery power to the Caterpillar ECM , and your only getting ignition power to the ECM.
This could be due to a wire on the batteries not being installed correctly .
Did you start the engine after the battery replacement ?
Or just waited till a few days before trying ?
The other possible is that if your newer chassis is like mine the , battery power fuse for the ECM is an inline fuse , and maybe blown.
While you were talking with Freightliner , did you ask for info on the type of starter relay used ?
Because when I passed on the file I have on my relay , another member said he had found his ,but didn't know what it was , because it was different that other relays he'd worked with.
Call F/L back , and ask for a file on the type of relay used, and have them send you , wiring diagrams and schematics for your chassis. Those will tell you if there is an inline fuse for the Cat ECM.
FYI. My starter relay is on a plate , on the frame rail behind the pass side dual wheels . Picture below and the file F/L sent on my starter relay ; just in case they still use the same one.

As mentioned above, the flashing dash lights makes me think that the battery connections are not tight or clean.

Always look where the last guy worked. ( Even if it's you )

Baiden,
I'm not sure I can help with the diagnosis, Skip most likely has more info than I can provide. I can however maybe help in you locating yours. That is, if your coach chassis is relatively close in construction to our '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the CAT C-7 330HP. On ours, like Skips, the starter relay system is located on the outside of the frame, behind the passenger set of duals. Now, if yours is there, it may be hard to see due to the fact that, it MAY have a cover over it, like it's supposed to but, it's not there on ours. So, those components are subject to all of what's thrown up on them from the duals including rain, mud, road debris and all that.

So, I don't know what's in the compartment behind those duals on yours but, it may be worth a lay-down and look up to see if they're there, on the outside of the frame.
Scott

Starter Relay

Thanks so much for the quick response. I did start the engine after installing the new batteries. I have installed new battery terminals, cleaned all the starter wires, and looked from the front of the coach to the rear for a starter relay. Freightliner provided me with the part number for a starter relay 06-26989-000 that I will purchase if I ever find the location. They also provided me with part numbers for a starter and selinoid. Initially I changed the batteries out because it was slow starting. The old batteries were tested and were weak. The flashing of the lights did not occur until it wouldn't start at all. I did jump it and it started, ran as usual, but the next time I tried to start it, same old thing. It also started after a hard reset suggested by Freightliner. As far as the ECM, I appreciate that suggestion. Im not sure I know how to proceed troubleshooting the ECM, sounds like I might have to call a technician if that's a possible problem. I will call Freightliner again. I will keep you updated if I find the problem..if you think of anything else that it could possibly be let me know! I guess this is a process of elimination. I just double checked to see if I had overlooked it and its not in the suggested places. In the meantime this retiree is stuck at home!

Just an update! I found the starter relay. It was located at the front of the engine compartment overtop the transmission on a metal plate. By front I mean towards the front of the coach. It was inside a black plastic box. It was in a location that was very hard to see and will be hard to retrieve. I have not removed it yet as I'm waiting on the replacement. Thanks to everyone that responded.
