Starting issue

I have a 1988 motorhome with 454 chevy engine. I thought the chassis battery was bad because mh would not start. it would crank over a few times very slowly but would not start. after replacing with new battery it did the exact same thing. cranked over but would not start and drained the battery in doing so. the starter has been removed and checked but no problem showed up. any ideas as to what I can do next or what else needs to be checked would be appreciated. thanks.

after replacing with new battery it did the exact same thing
Your saying when you replaced the battery, it still cranked over very slowly and would not start

two questions:

1) When was the last time you started it and it cranked over good?

2) If you have two batteries, a coach and a chassis, are you sure you replaced the correct battery?

If your mechanically/electrically inclined, you might consider installing an "EMER START" button, if you don't already have one. This is a momentary switch that energizes the isolator solenoid. If your coach battery is charged, its kind of like "jump starting" your truck battery by using your coach battery.

It won't do MACH 2, but I can get a sandwich and take a pee.

Bad battery cables or advanced timing. Try loosening the distributor and turning it a few degrees clockwise. Make sure to mark its original position so you can put it back where it was if it doesn't help.

I could agree with bad battery cables, except the OP said cranking, drained down the battery. Tells me he is drawing big current.

Before you move the distributor, pull the ignition wire , cutting power. If it don't crank any faster, it's not the timing.

How did you check the starter?
Just pulling it and spinning it with a battery is not a test.
