Steering Issues
Hi all, we have an older 32' class A HR. I had a dangerous amount of play in my steering constantly going from side to side. Replaced the steering damper with the stock munroe and that improved it greatly but the faster I go the more play in the steering, to be safe I need to keep it around 55. two good service centers checked my tie rods which I suspected and they said no there nice and tight could they be wrong? I do need to replace ( parts on the way ) my front sway bushings would that cause play in the steering?
I am replacing the front shocks (back ones ok) and everyone says Koni FSD does it really matter? What about a RTC (return to center steering damper? Last but not least I replaced all tires recently with a lesser quality brand and they are LT235/85/16 with a very high sidewall, could they be the culprit. Should I, could I replace the two front tires with good quality Michelins, would that make a difference. Looking to your experience to narrow this down.
Thanks

What year and what chassis do you have? Ball joints ok? how many miles? Did you do a front end alignment when you changed the tires?

If your problem started immediately after replacing tires, that could be the culprit. Years ago when radial truck tires first came out, truckers would not run them on the steering axle because of a perceived increase of play in the steering. Better tire design has taken care of that. Otherwise check for play in the sector of your steering box. You may be able to take up on the adjustment a little bit. But if it's worn too much, replacement is in order. I installed a Safe-T-Plus stabilizer on my old '73 Champion years ago. That helped some.
Good luck!

If you can find an assistant, have them "rock" or "roll" the steering wheel clockwise/counter clockwise, until resistance is felt from tire movement. You watch under front end for movement in linkage and tires. If you have steering wheel movement without linkage or tire movement, I would suspect steering gear. If this check seems "tight", may be tire sidewall issue.

Has anyone suggested adjusting the play out of your steering box...(some are adjustable).
