Steering problems

HI
I have a 1992 Pace Arrow 454 38ft motorhome. I am having a problem steering when I slow down to turn it is VERY hard to turn and have no power steering at all, but when I am going fast it steers fine. Also just sitting still and turning the wheel it makes a whining sound. I thought it was the power steering pump so I replaced it but I am still having the same problem. Has anyone had this problem or can anyone tell me what the problem might be?
Thanks
William

I repaired a similar RV at my shop about 2 years ago with the same problem. It was really hard to determine why it had this problem. This RV had the same drivetrain as yours.
What I found out was that the reservoir was just slightly lower than the large hose from the pump housing. AND the system wasn't tampered or modified in anyway other than the factory built specs.
Traditionally, that symptom would be found as the pump was going bad but that didn't work on that motorhome. However yours could be the pump, but I'd definitely check the height on the reservoir. We relocated it to a higher position and the problem was solved.

I bought and replaced the power steering pump but it has not helped. Also the reservoir cannot be raised I dont think because it has steel cables going in and I cant see how to move it. Thanks again!

I wonder if there is a value issue with your hydroboost system. The brakes are assisted via the power steering pump and if one part is not working then there are problems throughout the system. Just a thought

DonDee is on the right track. Several things to check besides the pump itself.

No, the reason I mentioned it because when it's low it will cavitate (air mix) the pump. It can't be too high.
If you changed the pump, give it a day or 2 to stop whining. Sometimes it takes a little time for the air to bleed out.
I've seen hydroboosts cause problems but rarely the symptom you're describing.
