Strange whistling sound..... more
Another question. What would make the engine make a strange whistling sound? It's like air being sucked into something,.. like a venturi sound. It's a pitch that's extremely annoying. It only happens at certain speeds.
And why does the transmission clunk at low speeds? This too is annoying when going through a town or city where it shifts from 1st to 2nd and down again.
It didn't whistle or clunk when we bought it or on the 1st trip to Atlanta GA. It became apparent during the second trip down to Fayetteville TN.
Any ideas what this could be?

Whistling sound could be a vacuum leak. The clunk at low speed I would check UV joints on drive shaft

For the clunking noise you might also want to inspect the transmission and motor mounts.

strange sounds
Would definitely check the U-joints on the drive shaft for the clunking sound.
As far as the whistle, it very well could be a vacuum leak, however if you could tell me a little more on just when it happens, ie, what RPM range or speed you are going when it is the loudest, dose it happen under hard acceleration, or any acceleration, or at steady speed. All this will help me to help you.
Check those U-joints pretty quick, if one should break while you are traveling it will cause some problems.

We had the same clunking sound on our 1999 Bounder. Took it to the local Ford dealer and they found certain bolts on the back of the transmission/driveshaft, not sure of the exact location, that were not torqued down properly. They torqued them and problem solved. Are you sure the whistling sound is not coming from a window or the windshield? Chuck

In our last moho, four winds Hurricane, the front grill would whistle. Change it out. Fixed.

Several Fleetwood models had the "whistling grill". I believe the easy fix was to put sand in the hollow tubes of the grill, or cap off any tube that is open-ended and allows airflow to create the whistling.

The whistling seems to start around 40 MPH and will continue until we either slow down or pick up speed. I don't know what the RPM would be as I can't see that from the passenger seat. I just asked him and he said he did not notice the RPM when that whistling starts/stops.
Will have him check the U-Joints tomorrow.

The sound is coming from the engine. From the passenger seat it seems to come from the driver side somewhere. But as a whilstly sound the direction can be deceiving. It seems to be coming from slightly more to the left of center, under where the engine is.
He's going to crawl under and check the bolts and U-Joints. How we can check if it's the grill whistling I have no idea.
Thanks to you all for the information/helpful advice.

Having had a south wind, the whistling sound could be due to an air leak in the window seal. We had a window replaced and it about drove us nuts. Had a glass shop check it and they said it was ok. Drove to Texas with it screing, finally stopped at anciras in Alvarado and their glass guy said it was improperly set even though sealed ok. They reset it and no more sound.

What year Hurricane did you have? Ours has the honeycomb grill, what did you replace it with? Did you ever change the Tuba air intake...such a crazy design.

The whistling sound is a vacuum leak, probably a hose cracked where it attaches to a port. This leak will affect your transmission's shift as it has a vacuum module for shifting. Find the vacuum leak, and the clunking will go away as the leak is causing the hard shifting. Randy

An easy way to check for the whistle from the external area of the MH is a roll of masking tape. Start covering suspicious areas (like the drain holes around window frames, ends of wipers etc. If that does not clear it up, you can simply remove the tape and continue on to other suspicious area.
We had a driver side mirror causing problems. Had to reposition and the mirror and the noise lessened - did not disappear but much quitter
