Stuck in the mud
I have got my Dutch star stuck in my own yard. It had rained a lot so I am waiting for the ground to freeze and then I will use levelers to raise the coach put boards under front wheels and lots of 57 gravel under rear wheels. Try and drive out. Should that not be successful I intend to have a 4 wheel drive tractor assist me with a chain. My question is where to attach the chain. There is a cast steel front axle which i can hook onto, or is there a safer structural member. Any thoughts????

You might consider pulling by the rear hitch.

If you can attach to 2 outer points on the axle and then pull from the middle you have less chance of axle damage. Like a Y, pull from that bottom leg. Good luck.

Do you belong to Good Sam emergency or Coach Net road service? I have Good Sam and had to have them winch me out of my friends yard after I sank my front axle into the mud. So much for Pa ground being frozen in December of 20113. On my 2008 Mandalay there are signs on the front axle that says to not pull from the front. You might want to contact Freightliner and make sure that you can pull from the front axle.

I second the rear hitch idea. On my 97 Country Coach it bolts directly to the frame rails.

go to the lumber yard and get several 3/4 plywood 4x8 sheet cut long ways into 2x8 sheets place in front of tires and drive out, moving the boards as you drive out. placed many a motor home across muddy yards years back.

Reducing tire pressure increases the tire foot print for traction while lightening the load per square inch on the tire.

What if pulling the weight of the coach (plus the resistance of the mud) far exceeds the weight rating of the hitch? I'm not sure what would fail first, but I certainly wouldn't want to be nearby.

Hook the chain to the 2 front spring hangers, if they don`t hit the bumper. A tow strap would be better, more forgiving then chain. They tow RVs, so I don`t your tractor will pull the front axle off.

$100 is cheap bill to pay a professional tow truck - your first broken piece on a motorhome will be much more money than that.
