Stuck on vacation.

I need some help I have a 1994 dolphin diesel pusher the drives very well but when I come to a stop and shut it down sometimes it takes minutes, hours, or days for it to restart where can I start checking to get this resolved. The engine is a 5.9 cummins

When you say it doesn't restart, do you mean it doesn't crank or it doesn't fire? How long since the fuel filters have been changed? Since it's a mechanical 5.9, if it cranks, it pretty much should run unless the fuel shut off or fuel pump is bad.

Does it have an electric pick up pump ?

May check that out. Mine would run fine after getting it Started, but sometimes it just took too long turning over to get it fired up. After we changed out the pick up pump, she will fire up very quickly. Turn the key to on position and walk outside and see if the electric pump is running

Good luck.

Glad you're aboard. I agree with Bob. Check the fuel filters and replace them if the unit cranks but doesn't start. There could be a Racor filter in the system that might be hard to find but has been the problem for numerous others here on the forum. If after you have changed them it does the same thing, could be a deteriorating fuel line (sucking air into the fuel system); if it has an electric shutoff solenoid that may be sticking; from there it could be problems in the fuel injection pump itself. Best of luck on a solution. Enjoy your adventures and be safe.

My 94 Cummins had the same problem; replacing the shutoff solenoid fixed it.

Now, once in awhile it will crank but not start immediately after the engine has been running and shut off for a short time. I stop cranking and press down on the gas pedal just a little and crank again; it has always started using that method.

cummins won't start

had the same problem with my 5.9 cummins- it was the fuel line sucking air at the filter fittings
removed line-cut two inch off-filled line & filter full of fuel- reinstalled with two clamps on each fitting, have had no problem since.

10 years exp with Cummins. Check the fuel pickup in the tank, I've seen the tube crack at the top where it is soldered to the nut.
