I would like to know where that bridge is at, cause I travel that route frequently with a 13 foot six inch dry box

I think a mistake...I came across SD on I90 last year. Don't remember anything below 14'...we're 13'1"....I'd have heard from DW if we'd been under anything that low.

Did see some 13'6" on the way North in Central Michigan. That will cause the backside cheeks to tighten. And the underpass in Marfa Tx will do the same...so I'm kinda used to noticing those things.

Agree, allstays must be wrong unless there are recent changes which I doubt. I have travelled I90 several times from NY right through to I5 which includes going through SD. Never came across any low clearence overpasses below 13' 6" that I recall. At the time I was 13' 2" with my satellite dome and I was always watching for height restrictions. No longer have the big rigs and now I am under 10' 6" so height is of less concern to me now.

The only one that scared me was a 12'6" pedestrian bridge at an airport. Turns out my RV is 12'6" empty.. . since we were a long way from empty we were less than 12'6" but I can tell you I was inching along waiting for the CRUNCH, with my foot already on the brake pedal.

Just curious....would it have been an option to dump the airbags to gain additional clearance if you were going slow (less than 5mph) ?

Have you tried dumping air and then using your brakes?

If you have airbag suspension, dumping air can drop you 3 inches or so. On mine, as soon as I let go of the dump button it starts inflating again. I'd only do it at 5 mph or less, too easy to grind a bag up or strain U joints. A workhorse chassis isn't airbag suspension, I don't think.

The Original Poster was concerned with low overpasses on interstate highways.

In people's travels down the road on major interstates, how often have you run across clearances that left you cringing as you zoomed under the overpass??? (and, ESPECIALLY, has anyone run across a clearance (again on a major interstate) that would not allow the typical DP height to pass at all???

To my knowledge there are no overpasses on the federal interstate system that a factory built motorhome can not drive under. There is no reason to dump air bags and some of the other discussion here. If you have added aftermarket equipment to your roof then it is prudent to get an accurate height measurement before driving.

FlyingDiver,

Where's that low overpass on the Northway on I-87? I've driven my almost 13' coach all the way up to Exit 30 where my son goes to college at Paul Smiths and never had an issue.

I don't remember, exactly. It was southbound only, in the vicinity of Lake George. This was '08, so they might have changed it since then. We're 13'4", and we might have been able to make it, but it would have been close.

FlyingDiver; I can't imagine ANY low clearance on I-87 anywhere in NY. I've drug a 13'6" 53' semi trailer up and down the whole length of I-87 hundreds of times since 1993 thru 2010 and NEVER ran into any low clearance and have never found one listed on the Rand McNally Motor Carriers Atlas.

Maybe it was a temporary issue. I just remember following the sign and taking the ramps. It was a long time ago...

I too have travelled on I87 from I90 to the Canadian border several times since 2001 and never saw any low clearance overpasses on that route. ???? In fact I have never seen a low overpass on any Interstate Hwy I have travelled on. Not saying none existed, just saying I have never seen any.

Good discussion and if any members see any, please provide a photo and exact location. I hope Allstays fixes the errors it shows also.
