Surge Protector Question

I have a Surge Guard 50A Protector (Portable) for my MH. We are planning a trip through Canada, where I understand they have mostly 30a service. If I can get the plugs right will my 50a protector work on a 30a service?

Your 50A surge protector should work with 30A service. Just plug the surge protector into a 50 to 30A dogbone adapter, and plug the other end of the dogbone into the pedestal. We use our 50A hard-wired surge protector with 30A with no problems.

Make sure the adapter you have supplies 120 volts to either both legs of the 50 amp service, or applies to the main side. Some of the commercially available 30-50 amp "dog bones" supply power to only one side of the 50 amp.

50 amp service is basically two 120 volt legs. On some motorhomes, the primary leg has the main air conditioner, outlets and appliances while the secondary side has some of the outlets, water heater, and the second air conditioner. Your wiring diagram should show which outlets and appliances are on either side of the two 120 volt legs in a 50 amp service.

When I plug into a 30 amp pedestal, I use an adapter that has a crossover which supplies 120 volt power to both sides of the 50 amp service. I still only have the 30 amps of total power available, but it's powering both sides of the 50 amp rig. The power management system senses it as the same 120 volt supply to both legs and displays amperage draw and sheds power as needed.

i have the same unit as yours and camp a lot in can. i was at a campground this sommer and it was 30 amp. and at supper time my unit kept dropping out because the voltage would drop everybody was cooking that means it was working perfect good luck pk42

Short answer YES!!! (That is emphatically)

Long answer: Even better than it does on a 50 amp outlet, Here is why
The unit performs several functions, with one excetion it will function on 30 amp exactly as it does on 50 amp.

That one eception is spike suppression... On 30 amp it works better (Since it has spike supressors designed for 100 amps)

Just remember, you are limited in how many total amps you can pull.

what would be a good 50amp surge protector for a reasonable price, seen some on amazon that are reasonable I will build my own before I buy one for 4 to 5 hundred dollars,

My 50a Surge Guard portable went bad. I replaced it with a 50a internal surge protector from Progressive Industries. I installed it myself in about one hour...works great.

Look carefully at what you get for your money. Some only have surge protection while the best ones protect way more like low voltage shutoff etc. It can be very costly if you go the cheapest route and have to replace the wiring and/or appliances.

Progressive Industries requires both legs to be energized, or it will not engage. Both legs must be over 114 volts as well.
