Swap out onboard LP tank

I dislike having to move the RV to fill the tank. Has anyone ever modified by removing the onboard tank and building a shelf for 3 or 4 removable tanks? Is is legal? I do have extend a stay installed but you cant leave the hose on with no tank attached it seems.

I bought the kit with quick disconnect hoses. So much easier to remove the hose for traveling, and you don't have to use a wrench every time.

It is certainly legal to have removable propane cylinders in a motorhome. The 2019 Winnebago Intent comes this way.

There are I'm sure a number of regulations involved, not sure it's a DIY project to convert.

Here is an example of the tee with quick disconnects that "setaylor216" mentions:

Tanks that are permanently mounted in an RV do not require rectification inspections. . Potable tanks must be rectified every 10 years I believe.

An alternative is to add a Tee so that you can use a portable DOT bottle in addition to the ASME fixed tank. The mod is simple (insert the Tee between tank & regulator) and you still have the fixed tank for back-up or bulk needs. And you can use either or both tanks as desired. The downside is you have to find a place to carry the portable LP bottle(s).

Here an example of a Tee and high pressure hose.

I agree with Gary. I added a Tee to the propane system on our Windsor. I then purchased a 100# propane tank from Lowe's. It worked great.

Where did you carry the 100# USDOT tank? How did you load/unload this tank? I can't even pick up my empty 100# tank.

Propane delivery trucks can come to you. Ever try that?

Propane t issues

Bought the aux T adapter from Sturgis. Installed per video. Bought 30# external tank. Tested on stovetop. Works fine. Gas central heat NO. SEEMS not enough gas. Tested on ASME tank. Central heat works fine. Had tank pressure tested. Plenty of pressure. Purchased new quick connect hose as a process of elimination (and easier) same problem. Furnace cuts on, seems to light and produce heat for a minute then no heat. Tested with ASME heats to 110⁰. Heat on aux tank only 98⁰. Any suggestions?

Our Windsor had large basement storage compartments. Just slide it in sideways.

I tried to get propane service from the truck but they refused.

Interested in what you find. I have same issue in reverse. My heat works fine on bottled but not on my onboard tank.

Did you check the inches of water column the new tank is supplying with the furnace running versus the existing tank ? Are you tied in before the coaches pressure regulator or after with a separate pressure regulator? Does the new tank have 100 % propane or a butane mix? This is easy to check with a mono meter and 11” is what it should be.
