Switching from DirecTv to Dish

Newbie here. We have a Winegard Trav'ler mounted atop a Dutch Star 4018. Switching to Dish. Seems like all I have to do at the dish level on the roof is replace the dish and feed element.

you will need to replace the dish. the module is programmed network specific and you MAY be able to flash it for dish but i could be wrong. i do know that they have a conversion for the dish but it will be sd only. to get full hd programming the whole dish needs replaced. again the box may be flashed but it MAY just get replaced as well.

Phone Winegard. I think you can go from Direct to Dish by replacing rreflector and lnb's. I tried going the other way and Winegard said no no. Worth the call not having to recaulk roof area.

I replaced the dish and lnbs with a kit from wingard. Works fine with full hd reception. Took about an hour on the roof, but no recaulking required. Full instructions came with the kit. Piece of cake!

I apologize. If you convert from dish to directv it is sd only. The other way around works full hd. As directv is a larger dish the installed dishnet assembly motors are too small to maneuver the the larger dish and require replacing the while assembly.

I did the switch you are asking about. Yes Winegard sells a conversion kit for about $300 which includes a new reflector that says Dish (presumably shaped differently), a new feed horn assembly, some new reflector mounting brackets. I put the whole kit in in about 60 mins. What they didn't tell me was the feed horn arm is a different length I had to remove and relocate the magnetic sensor that is tied to a warning light telling you the dish is stowed. Buy a small tube of silicone and have some self leveling roof sealant.

So I install the new dish , turn it on ....no signal. You also have to go into the Winegardcontrol box menu and change the settings to Dish. No signal. After tracking down cabling I found the DirecTV setup had a signal injector power box on the RG-6 cable coming down from the roof. (Dish does it differently).I disconnected that box, used a small straight coupling in lieu of it and voila, a valid antenna signal. You of course have to have a Dish receiver box.

My recommendation if you use Dish now at home or on a tripod is get your receiver fully updated by downloading the current software, the new programming etc at home first, then connect it inside your RV because if it doesn't work at first, you'll drive yourself crazy (like I did) before you figure out where the problem is. PM me if you have questions.

I did the same conversion last year. Contacted Winegard direct . Very helpful techs. Sent me all that was needed and I had it done locally. Might have done it myself a few yrs. back.
