Tag axle

Hi all. I am new to a class A with a tag axle. Don't want to sound stupid but what is the purpose of dumping just the tag axle air bag?

Saves the tire from scuffing sideways and the rig turns a tighter radius.
My tag lifts and my 45' rig turns as tight as my previous 40' non tag eig.

Another dumb question, How do you air back up after dump?

Also new to DP and I was told that while backing it dumps the air so there is no downward force that could render the rear drive wheels useless. Think backing up over a curb and tag lifts rear duals off the ground.

Mine has a switch for manual and auto. I leave it in auto and when I select reverse it automatically dumps the air. When I select drive, the tag begins to air up again.

Remember that the tag will only carry a percentage of the rear weight depending on what proportioning valve is being used. Some carry 40% of the rear weight while others carry 25, 30, or 35%. No matter what you drive over, it will carry the same weight and will not reduce the amount of weight the drive axle carries. It's correct that most tags dump when in reverse and will re-inflate when in a forward gear and the speed gets over a set point. I have mine programmed to dump when the directional is on and the speed is below 20 mph. It will re-inflate when the speed gets back over 20 mph or I can manually inflate them at any speed. The tag axle can be a very useful way to shift weight to or from the steer axle too, but that is for another discussion.
