Yeah, they charge by the pound. My car is $42, truck $85 and motor home $340. It started out much more reasonable as they initially had the weight as 13,500, which is only the front axle weight.

CWTEEL _ X2 I couldn't believe it when I went to renew my tags. I asked if they had the correct vehicle. It was like a 40% increase - about inversely proportional to the quality of the roads. My 18' open bed trailer even went up. I shall refrain from making any political statement about the quality of the leaders in Texas.

Just renewed my 2000 Harney classic here in Abilene. $224.50. 2003 Honda CRV $65.00. I agree the roads could be better. How ever the worst road in Texas is better than the best road in Illinois and some other states I have been in.

The Texas Leg is loathe to raise taxes but they love to increase user fees. Gotta love all the new toll roads!

Yeah, add up all the taxes and fees and most of us are in the 80% tax bracket.

Part, but not all of the increase is due to the fact you are now paying the state part of your inspection fee included with the registration. At the inspection stations you now only pay their part and the state dings their part on the tags. You would think the cost would have gone down since they are now only having to print one sticker, but nope.

.... Just received our registration notice up here in Oklahoma for the 1996 MH and it is $24.00. For the 2004 truck it is $45.00. No inspection required.

Lt Dan - We do not have the full emission test in most counties in Texas. Nonetheless, we pay for the inspection (whichever type), and we pay for the (now) one, combined window sticker. So how does a savings on the part of the state justify a nearly 40% increase in a simple window sticker? If our state and county roads were better I wouldn't mind. The federal dollars pay for a lot of the interstate highways' maintenance, but our legislators are doing all they can to NOT take federal funds for anything. The interstate highways are in a state constant repair (ooh, is that Texas' new state motto?) because the state agency in charge and their inspectors do not make the contractors accountable for their shoddy work at their expense. Our counties get a pittance from the state for state and county road maintenance. I too used to feel proud and brag about our roads in Texas, but not any more; just drive on SH 281 (a highly traveled north-south artery). As for the toll roads, drive PGB Turnpike SH 161 around Dallas if you think the toll roads are smooth and maintained.
