So I came home and drowned my sorrows in a bottle of wine. I'll try again in a few weeks, and worst case scenario move back to South Dakota where testing was a piece of cake.

Heck, next you'll tell me they will put a bag over your head and tell you to back up using "The Force".

Maybe I missed something. I was not aware that a Class B was required for driving a personal RV anywhere in the US. Has this changed? Are you getting one because you drive RVs for a dealer or something?

Texas Class B Non-CDL License
Yes some states require a non-CDL license upgrade from a standard operators license, usually for anything over 26,000 lbs and / or over a 10,000 lb trailer. Texas is one. Easy test here.

Quite a few states require an upgraded (but not CDL) license for vehicles over 26,000lb. The Texas class B license is one of them.

Nevada and Wyoming require it as well. Took my original written and practical in Nevada, transferred it to Wyoming. Were moving to Washington and I am hesitant to give up my Wyoming Class B. With our luck, Ill turn it in and then Washington will require it.

South Dakota exempts Recreational Vehicles from the Class B requirement but it applies in most states for those of us over 26k lbs.

FL also doesn't require any special type of license for RVs, just normal operators

glad I kept lic.
Went to DPS last week to turn in my CDL for regular lic. Now I'm glad I kept it. No medical exams as long as I don't drive for hire.

True, but you can't renew by mail and the penalties for any driving infraction are worse for CDL holders than for non-CDL. I'm glad I switched mine from CDL to regular.

Texas Class B road test passed
Took my road test today at Seguin DPS office. Relatively quick and straightforward though had to wait two and a half weeks to get a reserved time. Had some good advice from other forum members.
The guy I got to accompany me to the DPS test and to do a couple of parking lot maneuvering sessions in preparation says he'd be glad to help others who need to go through the licensing process. He's the guy at our local school district, a San Antonio suburb, who is designated to coach new school bus drivers through their licensing (and is a class A bus driver himself, retired military).

You must keep a current medical on file with Texas DPS or your CDL will be downgraded to standard license when your current medical expires.

Correct, but it's a "standard" non-CDL class B, which is all that's needed for an RV. It does not get downgraded to a class C.

That is good to know. My company failed to send my new medical in and I got notified by the Texas Dept. of Public Safety that my CDL was going to be downgrade to a class C and I would have to retake all test if I wanted a CDL again. Had the company send a copy of my medical registerd mail and all is well for two more years.
