Thinking Used Monaco
Appreciate your input. We are thinking of getting a used Monaco. What are the pros and cons of 6 vs 10 wheels other than just cost of tires and I think there is one Cummins diesel model that I have heard to avoid--which is it please?

We had a 2001 Monaco Windsor and loved it. I would look for 2000-2008, the original Monaco and avoid anything with the 4 bag suspension.
Remember that Holiday Rambler, Safari, Beaver are all basically a Monaco, bought and built buy Monaco.
The Monaco forum on here is top shelf.

I haven't ever seen a class A motorhome with 10 wheels. If you are referring to having a TAG axle they have 8 wheels as the tag usually does not have dual wheels. The reason for a tag axle is to carry more weight. Most 40 foot and all over 40 feet will have a tag axle to carry the weight.

FYI, Its 6 and 8 wheels, not 10! The tag only has 2 wheels! Rail!

I believe the engine you are talking about is the 2007 EPA model Cummins ISX 650, CM871 which is what I have. At 45,000 miles it broke a valve off in #6 for the second time. Cummins knows of the problem but refuses to consider warranting them. However, once it's rebuilt with the new parts (head, valves, turbo and ECM programming) it seems to be bullet proof.

There are many very good Monaco products out there to consider. A tag axle would be nice if you chose one. In fact it's hard to find a newer coach that is as well built as the some of the older early to mid 2000's out there. Good values to be had also. Just look for a well maintained clean looking coach. If it has been upgraded with new TV's, LED, residential refer (for some), etc. you will be money ahead. We have an 06 Beaver that, although I keep looking, is really hard to duplicate in a newer model without spending a heck of a lot more money for still just a bedroom, bath, kitchen, and living area.
Happy hunting, that's half the fun right there.

Thanks
Thanks for all the input. So 8 not 10 wheels-whew that is good to know. Now the tag axle is for the extra weight then not necessarily to give a better ride?

Tag axle does both - more weight carrying and better straight line performance... most coaches over 40 feet will have a tag...

Actually, the tag can worsen the ride, as you have one more axle to go over the bump. think of how smooth it would be with no axles! The tag is there to carry the extra weight, and to provide extra brakes. In your car, the front brakes do most of the braking, as the weight is close to 50/50 between the front and rear axles. In a motorhome, the rear weights are about twice the front weights, hence the extra wheels. With so much weight on the rear wheels, they do a greater amount of braking than seen in a car. The tags are not driven by the engine, they just carry weight and provide brakes. My Monaco 40' has no tag, and I don't miss it. It's a complex system of stuff I don't need. More tires = more drag = more $$. That's why you'll see the truckers raise their tags if they can.

I believe you were thinking 8 air bags, on the 2 axle, and 10 air bags with the tag.

I have the tag axle and love it. My rig is on a Roadmaster chassis with 10 shocks and 10 airbags. More stability, smoother ride, more cargo capacity and weight capacity that makes it near impossible to overload.
I suggest that you test drive both!

We really love our 2002 Windsor! We chose the 40' because we wanted as much space as possible but did not want a tag axle.

There are IRV2 members that are very knowledgeable about the Monaco Products.
These are some items that IRV2 members need to know to help with your questions.
Budget. This will basically show you how far back in years you need to go.
How you are going to use the RV? This might help with the length and # of slides, engine size etc.
Are you doing your own maintenance on the coach?
Newer Monaco's than are much different than Older coaches. I think the change was around 2008 or 2009. You would need to verify.
You might consider visiting the Monaco owners forums for more Monaco coach information. Certain year Beaver, Safari and Holiday Rambler coaches were build by Monaco and are very good also. (I am not sure what year range.)
Have fun shopping.

After our first year with an RV, which is my 2006 (Monaco) Beaver Monterey, we love it! It's on the 8 bag Roadmaster chassis and when looking for a RV/Motorhome I first knew I wanted a driver. Wasn't convinced to a class C or class A but after about two years of traveling around the midwest looking at the various RV dealers I ran across mine. I had driven maybe 10 or so different coaches and a DP was on the top of my list if it fit my budget. This is the 40'/4 slide and it checked all the boxes we had and then some. King bed, big enough shower, plenty of storage, DP, side radiator, 8k Onan, the Aquahot was a bonus we didn't even realize how nice of a feature that was until this past winter. Amazing system indeed!
Best of luck with your search!
