The RV industry is so price sensitive (or paranoid, if you prefer), that Workhorse chassis went out of bsuiness when they could no longer offer the GM 8.1L gas engine. Even though they had a nicely priced diesel from their parent company, Navistar. Buyers at the entry end of the motorhome market are buying slide-outs, big tvs, and other living features, not diesel engines. An extra $12,000 will buy a lot of amenities.

Strictly on a engine performance basis, a front diesel is head and shoulders above a gas powered unit, but engine performance is only one ticky mark on the buyers wish list. And probably not on Momma's list at all.

That's along the lines that I was thinking but I really have no ideas what the cost would have been. If Workhorse could have simply switched from offering all their chassis with the 8.1 gas and started offering them with a 6.6 Duramax on every single chassis they sold (I'm guessing that might be 10k chassis per year but really have no idea), I was thinking it might only be $3-4k premium (the optional diesel on GMC trucks is more than that but again, it's offered as an option and not standard so might be more expensive because of that). The current 6.6L Duramax appears to be 400hp/765lbs and that's with an Allison 1000 - I wouldn't be surprised if they could get even more out of it if they had a heavier-duty transmission.

They could even have offered the 4.5L Duramax (up to about 310hp/520ft/lbs).

Personally, I'd prefer either of them over the Ford 6.8L (362HP at 4750 / 457 ft/lbs at 3250) or the older Workhorse 8.1L

True, but the Allegro name has been synonymous with front engine gas motorhomes. I would assume that Tiffin wanted to make it clear that this was a new model of Allegro, just as they did with the Allegro Bus.
