I have about the same sized rig as the OP. I plan ahead before I need gas. I have about a 400 mile range to the 1/4 tank mark. I use the gasbuddy app to get locations along my route as well as prices and sometimes photos of the station. I haven't had much luck with Pilot stations, but most FJ's on the east coast have RV lanes which work well. I believe it's all about the planning to make filling up less stressful.

Try early in the morning before people get out of bed.

When looking ahead for a good gas stop I tend to use Allstays Truck&Travel app but the AllStays Camp&RV app is also pretty good....and it shows all gas stations, not just Truck stop types, if you need to expand your search for fuel stops.
