Tire buy back

I've been following a few of the tire threads and occasionally when talking about prices someone mentions they will be getting money credited for their old tires. What determines that?

Age and condition of the old tires and if the dealer has a good market for used tires in that size.

I suspect 22.5" used RV tires can be "finished" on the trailer of a tractor trailer...

I took my old pickup tires to a local shop where they sell a large volume of used tires.
I was expecting to pay a disposal fee.
They paid me $40!!!

My tires 255 70R22.5 have 23K, dates run from 1006 to 3906, no sidewall cracking and treadwear is very little and uniform. Not sure about the used tire market. Considering age and wear looks like I might "qualify" to get something for rather than pay a disposal fee.

Is the best approach to go into the dealer with an expectancy that there should be a credit?

All you can do is ask for it. They weren't interested in the 295/80's off mine - no commercial rigs use that size, even though it can be substituted for the commercially-popular 11R22.5 size. Dealer said he had little luck convincing fleet tire buyers to use alternate sizes and he didn't want to be stuck with an "oddball" size.
