Tire Inflation using nitrogen?
Newby question #2.
I hear about people filling camper tires with nitrogen to avoid expansion from heating up and temp changes around them.
Has this ever been, or is this practiced on Class A's with 22.5 tires?
At what cost?

Air is 78% N2 so I have no idea how inflating a tire to about 96% N2 can provide improvements claimed by those selling the N2 inflation systems.
N2 pressure will increase at about the same rate as dry air unless you have a pressure gauge that measures and is accurate to 0.01 psi
I have a blog post "Inflate with Nitrogen and there will be Magic
Now dryer air with a fitting like this can result is less pressure growth due to heat but even with wet air the pressure growth is not significant.

Thanks for the response. It's late in the day yet want to take time and read the fine print on your blog. All interesting stuff.
My application was to ease ware and tare on tires this June - August while out west and up north thinking better to keep cool tires than change tires.
I am sorry I missed your presentation in Perry. I am only hours from there and would have enjoyed it. The more I can learn the better my cost of operation can remain low.
Off the top it looks like taking some of the Georgia humidity out of the tires may be all I need. Thanks again for your time and input.

I think any advantage of filling with nitrogen will be minimal. Where will you find nitrogen on the road? If you have low air pressure are you going to drive on an under inflated tire until you reach a place that can supply you? Especially if it were a steer tire.

I'm searching for a helium supply so I can lighten my load and carry more stuff. I was going to get a tag axle but was afraid that might float too much.

Wear and tear will happen whether filled with air or nitrogen.

Well,
I kind-a look at it this way. There's been a few zillion RVs, truck-campers/Class As, Class Cs, diesels/gassers, and every other kind of travel coach, that have been running regular AIR in their tires for decades and decades and, it seems to have worked for a few decades so far. And, I'm by far, no engineer, physics professor or, anything else that would be an expert on this matter but, may I ask, isn't there regular AIR, inside the tire, when it's mounted on a rim?
And If so, then you fill it with nitrogen, isn't that Nitrogen now mixed with the air that was already in the rim? If so, what's being accomplished here? Aren't the tires on most, if not all RVs designed to take whatever heat rise, due to traveling for any length of time? I guess if one thinks Nitrogen is of some benefit, well, then ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Been there and done that in my dumber years. Filling RV tires with N2 is a joke and waste of money. Air your tires to 5% more than needed to carry the load and hit the road. As long as they are properly inflated from any compressor, they can handle any pressure increase generated from rolling down the road. Rising from 115 psi up to 140 psi is not uncommon with my front tires.

SMB...... If you plan on running at 200 mph, perhaps. Or if you plan to take your coach to 40K ft, where it's always -55 degrees, perhaps. Otherwise, probably more hassle than it's worth.

It works out well for my VW dealer who tried to charge me $90 for nitrogen in the tires of my new VW jetta. (It also gave me great satisfaction to cross out that line of the offer sheet!)
