Tires 1989
I recently bought a 99 American Eagle and had an FMCA inspector inspect the rig before buying. He told me that the tires were old but in excellent condition. They are Goodyear G670 275/80 22.5. My visual inspection also shows that there are no cracks whatsoever in the sidewalls or tread. The RV has been kept inside its entire life.
Here is the iffy question. I learned about checking the DOT number and low and behold it shows a year of 1989. From everything I read that is a bit old. They look nearly new. The owner also owned a trucking company. Why would a tire from 1989 that was not put into operation until 2013 be a bad tire. I know the numbers are a stretch but they really look like new. I have decided just for safety sake to replace the steer tires with Continentals but wonder if I need to do anything with the drive tires.

I would question whether or not you read the correct number for the date.

So in other words the tires are 11 years older then the coach?
Date codes changed starting in 2000. Pre 2000 it was a three digit code with the first digit being the year and the second two numbers the week. As such there's no way to tell what decade the tires were made. So if the number is 89xx you would actually read it as 9xx which considering the age matches up with 1999 not 1989.
Was 1999 a good year for tires? Maybe Goodyear only made them to last one year considering post Y2K we were going to be living in caves again.

If previous owner owned a trucking company, I wonder if the 1989s are retreads...

I dont know about pre 2000 but the tires might not be that old. Current date codes are four numbers in a small oval that is always upside down and in a shadow if I ever find them but they have four digits. The first two are the year and the last two are the week so 9906 would be mid March 1999.

Sorry, Quincy.
The first two numbers are the week and the second two numbers are the year.

Actually the first 2 digits are the week and the last 2 the year.

Post a picture of the date code for an accurate response.

I am going to be at the coach on Tues and will get a picture. It is a little confusing to me. I mean, why would such old tires be in such good condition, ride well and get the okay from the inspector? Why would they be 10 years older than the coach or why would someone store them for ten years.
So, all the answers on here are helpful.
Thanks

89 or 99..............replace, plain and simple..........and even if they were retreads, it is usually the tread that gives out, it is the sidewall..............

Something I have never understood is how can a tire go bad sitting in a dark covered storage mounted on a wheel or just on the rack for ten years? If it was not exposed to UV rays or ozone, why does 7-10 years make it bad? Even if it was run a few times a year and returned to covered storage, why is it still not a safe tire in ten years?? I think that too many on this forum repeat something they have heard and maybe add their own "facts" to come to their conclusions. 7-10 year replacement is a good guide for the tire that has been exposed to the environment all of that time. Why would the same apply to tires that may have been in the dark for ten years??

There are many misconceptions.
Old filters
Old tires
Mfgr of oil
Type of battery
And many more
Let your conscience and your wallet be your guide.
After 60 years with very few problems I let my experience guide me, not the internet.
I've used older filters, any close viscosity oil mfgr on sale, and miles not age to schedule PM.
But never ignore preventative maintenance.
