Towing a car hauler

Considering buying an enclosed car hauler trailer. My coach is rated to tow 10k My question for those of you towing a large trailer with a motorhome is, do you have to use a hitch with the weight distribution bars?

I have towed a 12,000# enclosed trailer trailer with a WD hitch. It had a 1500# tongue weight and my hitch was rated to tow a 15,000# w/1500# dead weight. I used a WD hitch and felt that it was more stable and put less stress on everything when hitting those sudden dips in the road. It also had a sway control feature with it. I currently tow an 8,000# open trailer w/o a WD hitch and I can't say there is any difference. I think the reason is that the coach weighs 40,000#, so the added trailer weight can not have a big impact on the overall handling. My son tows a 26' enclosed trailer weighing 14,000# with a 2,000# tongue weight w/o a WD hitch. His coach weighs 60,000#, so the added trailer weight is not a big factor either. Our coaches have tag axles which will more easily handle heavy tongue weights. Your single axle 40'er would probably benefit from a load distributing hitch more that ours did.

My trailer is 10k loaded/1050lb tongue weight, tows perfect.......in my experience, a w/d hitch will have little to no affect on air ride suspension as the suspension is at ride height no matter how much weight you put on the ball. Just my thought's.......

I pulled a 62 corvette to Orlando in a enclosed trailer with no WD and didn’t know it was back there.

Have done it with and without, came to the conclusion that there was no difference, so I don't use WD anymore, just more work and hassle to deal with.
