I'm about to close the deal on a 1999 Harney Renegade 37' Diesel Pusher that has 17,500 miles on it. The generator has 420 hrs on it. Everything works, no previous dammage, no leaks and it comes with a warranty.

We just bought our Class C last month and we are making money on trading it in toward this model. The price is under what NADA states. I really wanted a Class A with a slide. This model has 1 slide, ceramic tile floor throughout, solid wood cabinets, granite coutertops, washer/dryer combo. A lot more room and features than our current C offers.

My questions are I'm new to diesel engines. This one is rated at 275 hp, has the Allison 6 speed tranny, auto jacks, satelite in motion antenna, even an icemaker. What do I need to be aware of regarding maintance? I know 17k miles is still new and not even broken in. The only this I notice is the graphics are fading but that is to be expected. All I forsee towing is a 8x14 enclosed trailer with my Harley/sidecar inside.

School me on this model and or any concerns I should be aware of. I did see a brake recall for this model. I need to check to see if it was done.

Congratulations on your new Class A. It's a nice looking coach. I am not familiar with that particular coach, however, somethings are constant across brands. Make sure that all the necessary maintenance has been done and is up to date. With the DPs this will most often be done by time rather than mileage. Enjoy your new coach.

Harney is an orphan brand but seemed to be well respected by its owners. From the photos, that looks like an exceptionally well cared for coach.

I'd get all the filters and fluids changed and the belts too, unless there are maintenance records showing it is up to date. Diesels have a lot of filters and things to maintain, so it will be an expensive first service, but worth it in the long run.

And check those tire dates - coaches that are little used tend to have good looking tires that are dead of old age. I'd plan on replacing any tire approaching 7 years of age.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined so I'd get a service manual and do as much as possible myself. I agree that the coach was very well maintained. It is very clean and functional for what we are looking for. I always preferred these options when looking for a Class A:
slideout
plenty of room/good flow with floor plan
automatic leveling jacks
lots of cabinet and basement storage
satellite for TV
prefer a diesel for towing capacity

I'll ensure everything gets serviced and check the dates on the tires. Will the 275 hp engine/tranny provide plenty of torque when pulling about a trailer/cargo of 3k lbs through the mountains? I'll check but would this model have air ride suspension?

Your new Class A was made by one of the sons of Matt Perlot, the founder of Safari, when he apparently wanted to start his own RV business. The Harney Coach is very close to the Safari products of it's era in design and features. At some point, Safari produced it's own "Magnum" chassis, and your coach may use this chassis.

Safari went from a private to public company, was sold to Monaco, then Monaco was bought out of bankruptcy by Navistar - the parent company of International Harvester.

If you are interested in such things, I'm sure your Harney would be welcomed in Safari club activities. Safari International is a chapter of FMCA and is probably a good source of technical information.

George, thanks for all of that information. It really is helpful to know the history behind it. I'm still working the details out on the unit. Hope to have it finished soon.
