Transmission temperature sensor
Hi everyone I would like to install a transmission temperature sensor in my GM 4L80E transmission I have a 2001 Georgie Boy 8.1 L engine
I know the best place for the sensor will be on the out going fluid line
I would like to know if I need an adapter for the sensor or does the transmission has a plug where the sensor can be installed

I have the same tranny in 95 Suburban. Here's what I did to instal a tranny temp gage.
1. get a 12 pack
2. remove tranny pan drink a beer
3. drill hole in tranny pan and instal a drain plug. Autozone has a tranny pan drain plug kit for about $10.
4. buy the tranny temp sending unit and a new tranny filter while at parts store. When you get home, drink a beer.
5. take the drain plug and sending unit to a machine shop, give them to the machinist and ask hom to drill and tap the drain plug so the sending unit goes in. when he's done, give him a beer.
6. you can figure out the rest after a few more beers
The hottest fluid is in the pan, after the tranny has used it and puked it out. The tranny will pick up this hot fluid and run it thru the cooler before using it.

On the left side of the transmission is a small metal plug used to test the pressures when diagnosing. Look hard as it is hard to see.
Pull that plug and replace it with the sensor. Very easy to do. This has worked very well for me.

Depending on the year of your rig check with ScanGaugeII it should be able to read the trans temp. from your engine computer. and a whole lot of other things.

My 91 with 4 speed automatic has two temp gages wired to two sensors teed into the outgoing transmission cooler line and one on the return line where they enter the transmission case.

John Wayne has the right idea. I installed one on my 2010 Colorado and gives me engine oil temp, pressure and Trans temp + a whole lot more. I bought it used on ebay for $90. Took 30 min to install and setup.

I wonder if my 2001 Georgie boy is too old for the ScanGaugeII
I would like to know if anybody installed the temperature sensor what type of fitting did they use on the out going line to the oil cooler, that seems to be the best place to put the sensor

No its not. It will plug into the diagnostic port under the dash on the left side of the steering wheel.

Scangage II works fine on my 1999 F53 chassis.

Do you get transmission temperature ?
I ask because I have a SGII on a 1999 E450 chassis and I don't get a reading on trans temp.

I had to program my SG2 to display trans temp. Check the manual.

You have a 2010, correct ? Probably has that feature.
