Treating Rubber For Outside Sliders
Hi Everyone.
First Happy New Year...
I have a 2013 Tiffin Phaeton. When I slide out my bump outs the rubber outside sometimes doesn't deploy right. I have to get on my ladder and pull the rubber out so it's laying correctly on the bump out. It only happens on the two forward bump outs. I washed the rubber and that worked for a couple of times. Is there a cleaner that I should be using on the rubber? The rubber looks really good and I am frustrated I need to go up my ladder every time. Any help is grateful.

Mine don't go out every time either. Not really a problem, and no need to use the ladder. Your awning stick with the hook on one side and the round loop on the other side, use the loop part against or inside the rubber while holding the hook end and just push up or down to move the rubber in or out as needed. You should be able to reach the very top without any problem.

There's a lubricant you're suppose to use but it's name escapes me. Check your users manual it'll be in there.

If you search the Internet, you will find numerous videos that suggest using baby powder in an old sock. There is supposedly sprays for this but baby powder works.

Recommend you consider a good wash and rinse followed by a protectant/lubricant. I've had good luck with 'baby bath and vinegar' wash and '303 protectant'

There is a soft rough strip that you can buy to put on the slide that keeps the rubber turned out like it should be. Self-sticking tape applied to the slide itself. Others just use their awning rods to straighten it out. Me, I haven't worried about it for 6 years now and it hasn't caused a problem. I do use ProtectAll slide out rubber lube once a year to keep the rubber soft. Works for me.

Newmar recommends and I use baby powder on a small towel. Not sure what Tiffin recommends.

I use the slide out lube and it works very well. I've heard the baby powder works too, but I also read the powder kind of drys the rubber out some, where the slider lube conditions the rubber, which it does appear to do.

To reach under the slide toppers, I use an old push-broom stick with a Johnny mop taped to one end. I put liquid rubber lube on the Johnny mop, climb a step-ladder and I can reach past center from both ends of the slide. Ends and bottom seals are easy to reach.

I believe you may have that backwards. Baby powder is what the rubber manufactures use. If your slide out lube has petroleum or silicon in it, that will deteriorate the rubber over time.

These are all great suggestions for me. I am grateful for all the help although I am still confused. I don't know if I should use baby powder or a lubricant 😟

At the risk of confusing even more..........I use corn starch. I use a plastic squeeze bottle like cafe or diners use for ketchup. An inch of two of cornstarch thn hold the bottle upright and just powder will come out and can be directed with the nozzle. Worked well for us for many years. Good luck

Actually, a lot of the baby powders are actually corn starch. Not to many use talc anymore.
