Question Troubleshooting intermittent ABS Light

Hello all,

Looking for the genius of this group!

I have a 1998 Georgie Boy Swinger built on the Chevy P30 (original Workhorse) chassis (454 engine) and my ABS light comes on after I drive it about a mile. Sitting still and turning on the engine the light is off. Now this happened after I had the drive shaft removed and balanced. (They also put in new U-Joints and a new Carrier bearing).

Now I put my ODBC scanner in the plug and there were no stored codes on it. The brakes feel fine when I stop and there is no squeaking. It seems to be fine except for the light so obviously something is wrong!

Every time I start the engine the light is off and stays off until I drive it.

Any ideas on where to troubleshoot this? Thanks

Just a shot in the dark...
The ABS light was on solid but can't remember if it came on only while driving because this happened nine years ago. Techs worked on it for many hours. Turned out to be a loose pin in a connector.

Thanks, I will take a look for those but I was wondering why the code does not stay in the system (so I can troubleshoot it easily). I guess I can plug in my scanner and drive down the road and when the light comes on, stop and check and see what the code is.

Does your OBD scanner read ABS codes? Many generic OBD scanners only read emission/engine related codes. You need to be able to retrieve codes from the EBCM for ABS. Electronic Brake Control Module

Check the ABS Sensors—-mine were all covered in “magnetic” fuzz. I pulled all four sensors one by one..cleaned them off—-WaLa...no ABS light.

My chassis is a F53 but most ABS systems are made up of similar pieces and parts....happy hunting.

I agree with the above post, sure sounds like a dirty or loose abs sensor. I would try cleaning all four sensors.

Thanks all for the info!

I have heard that on some of the P30 chassis that there are no rear sensors but that they might be off from the transmission. I think I can see the front ones but I suspect that the issue might be around the rear area as the last work was having the drive shaft balanced and the U-joints and the carrier bearing replaced. Prior to that work I never had the ABS light go on.

I didn't want to say it, but based on your description it's possible the work done recently caused the problem. Maybe a connector was not reconnected. Or maybe a connector was not seated correctly.
